This is my first post and I hope I can find the answer I need. I have used the search button for my question, but haven't been successful. Hope someone can help!
My son got a new Samsung A737 at the end of May. While working at UPS it got wet and does not work now. I understand I can purchase a phone from Walmart or Target and use his SIM card. Our problem is we can't find what phones use the SIM card. I know A T & T and T- Mobile, but if there are others that are cheaper we wouldn't mind checking them out.
Can anyone help with a list or tell me where to look for one?
Thanks

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
Alltel is not a GSM carrier. A very small portion of their network was GSM. I believe years ago they bought it from Western Wireless, but it's a virtually insignificant part of their network that was used only for roaming. And with the buyout I am not sure how much of that portion of the network is now owned by VZW or whether AT&T will grab that portion.

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
TracFone also has a GSM network which operates on the AT&T national network.
The only issue is that TracFone uses both CDMA and GSM devices. CDMA devices do not have SIM Cards and operate on Verizon's network and GSM has SIM cards and operates on AT&T's network. TracFone does not advertise which is which. The only way you really know is if you open the phone's back and see if there's a SIM. I believe if you purchase at Wal-Mart, they will honor an exchange if you get the wrong one.
TracFone devices are the cheapest available...nearly. Remember, the device may need to be "unlocked" to operate with your SIM Card you already have. Seek a professional for this process.
Here's a suggestion, go to this page and view all of the TracFone devices. Click on them and under accessories if it says "SIM Card included" then it is GSM. TRACFONE Nationwide Prepaid Wireless - PHONES May require ZIPCODE before proceeding.
Then go to this WalMart.com page to see if they carry the phone you like!
Make sure you go to electronics and then cell phones: Walmart.com: Save money. Live better.

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
I have a CDMA phone on the Verizon Wireless network and it has a SIM card. So with that said your statement, [ICDMA devices do not have SIM Cards and operate on Verizon's network and GSM has SIM cards and operates on AT&T's network. ][/I], is not 100% accurate. Most of Verizon's phone DO NOT have SIM Cards but the BlackBerry Storm does have a SIM Card and is a QUALCOMM 3G CDMA Phone.

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
Verizon Wireless phones do not have SIM Cards. That statement does currently hold true.
Yes, certain devices have SIM Cards...but they DO NOT work while in the United States. You could take the SIM Card out and be good to go while in the United States.
Try taking the SIM out of a GSM (AT&T) carrier and see what happens.

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
Ok, I took the SIM Card out of my Verizon BlackBerry Storm and the phone did nothing once powered up. I reinstalled the SIM Card and it did what it was suppose to have done, display all my applications and allowed me to make phone calls and send and receive emails/text messages. I found out that the BlackBerry Storm is the only Verizon Wireless phone that has a SIM Card.
Thanks but My original statement remains TRUE..........

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
There is also Viaero Wireless in Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska: as far as phones go there are quite a few you can look on ebay for "GSM Unlocked" phones or check out www.gsmarena.com to get reviews and specifications.

Re: List of GSM phone carriers
I have consumer cellular and they have a sim card that you can get to use in an AT & T phone and any GSM phones.
Which I assume is AT & T.
