for a person that doesn't really talk a lot on the phone, is the cheapest option to buy a phone and sign up for a pay-as-you-go plan?

also, are 3-year contracts worth it?

    Re: some basic questions

    Hi Jamal!

Well, the first thing I would like to say is I don't think any type of a contract would be good.... just because if you use this phone 100 times a week or only 100 times for 15 months, you still have to pay that bill ever month. I've learned my lesson about contracts, and when mine is over, I wont be signing anything else for my provider!

So I believe the best thing for someone who just wants a phone to have incase they might need it would be to go with prepaid! Because what ever type of phone you'll be getting you'll have to keep it when you sign that contract unless you will want to pay even more out of pocket to get the next best thing when it hits the market... just because as soon as a phone hits the market it's already obsolete... and something even better is already in the making! With prepaid, the phones are getting better and better and you buy what time you want to use and that's IT!!!!

So I would checkout a few different prepaid providers and just see what you might find you'll like.... Let us all know what you decide!

Yeah, if you don't want to use you phone heavily, just find a used on that you like from eBay or something like that, trot down to your local provider and ask them to set it up for a pre-paid account.

Now mind you, just make sure that your local provider's technology and the phone you buy match. i.e. CDMA vs GSM.
