I am looking for new provider/phone/plan. i have specific requirements and would like some input. I am in US. I will only consider GSM network, so i nerrowed it down to AT&T and TMobile.
I need to be able to switch/use the SIM card when abroad, so only GSM will do.
I also want to be able to use SMS (what most other countries use) and text (most common in US). I would like to be able to look up my email and go on the web as well. i don't need a full blown version of internet browser, just enough to look something up when necessary.
In terms of plan, i will need voice/sms/texting/web. we are not heavy cell phone users, but i have a feeling our texting/web will go up with use. We currently have 700 minutes, unlimited nights/weekens and this contract expires on 11/17/09. so i do have some time to research. I checked usage for the last 4-5 months and we don't even use 200 minutes per month, but most of this is peak. We currently have no texting and are not using the web. this is part of the change i want to make. I also would like to add international calling, but will compromise depending on price. Cost is a consern. We will need:
1.1 phone that has SIM/SMS/texting/web with QWERTY keaboard
2 1 phone with easy texting layout (this one needs to look "cool" to a teenager) and
3.1 simple phone.
I can compare things myself, but selecting the new network seems to be very complicated, and i am having trouble figuring out plans and that one "can do all" phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: Looking for new provider/phone GSM/SMS/web
Both AT&T and T-Mobile have similar rate plans. The thing is with AT&T now is if you buy most PDA / QWERTY phones from them direct they will require you to upgrade to a PDA plan which will cost an additional $30 a month. Not needed if you buy the phone online :-)
I think you may get a little better rate with T-Mobile but you may want to check out the coverage in your area to make sure you are actually going to have service most of the time.
With the amount of minutes you are currently using - it may be worth checking out AT&Ts lowest usage plan since they have rollover minutes and they carry over from month to month.
If you buy the phone online you can find a phone at a discount for either carrier. I would recommend one that is already unlocked so that you can use the phone abroad. Just look for the term "unlocked" when searching for a phone.
There are so many options to choose from as far as SMS / QWERTY / GSM phones go. If you are looking for something reliable that has all the features and you do not want to pay an arm and a leg for - I highly recommend a slightly older Blackberry. You can pick one up for well under $100 online and they are great phones.
Lastly - for international usage, I wouldn't recommend getting an international plan. You can find sim cards in the countries you will be traveling to and most hotels or newspaper stands can point you in the right direction.
