    Hi folks.

My wife and I currently use flip phones from tracfone. We are ready to make the jump to smart phones, and I'm asking for help choosing our carrier.

Given the research I've already done, I'd like to avoid contracts, and I'm thinking about buying us Moto Gs. Seems like a good value (I do not want an Apple product, so we are going with Android).

Since we don't currently have smart phones, I cannot say how much data will will need. My wife and I have wifi at home and at work, so that will be our primary network access. We don't make a whole lot of phone calls or text.

Looking at coverage maps, it seems out best carrier choices are AT&T and Verizon. Is there a particular MVNO that is highly recommended with those networks? What kind of plan should we get?

    Thanks!

I would check out Welcome to Straight Talk or NET10 Wireless . They use a mix of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Or you could just get AT&T's prepaid directly.

Anything that uses Verizon's network exclusively will likely be using CDMA only phones, which will leave you with limited choices if you you decide to switch since most prepaid services use GSM.

Thanks for the info; I did not know Verizon implied CDMA.

Would it make sense to use a plan that is completely pay as you go for the first month or two, to get a feel for how much data we consume? I'm referring to a plan where we actually pay for each call minute, MB of data, text, etc.

There are apps to estimate and track your data usage. AT&T has an online estimator: AT&T Mobile Share - Cell Phone, Tablet & Mobile Device Plans from AT&T (click on estimate my monthly usage in detail)

Keep in mind that it greatly depends on what apps you use and how often you are not on wi-fi.
