News: New Google Maps (with Navigation) Software Update: Version 3.4

Not sure if there's a post related to this here yet, but I'm making one...very detailed. I did search and never had any luck finding one.

Well, basically this update includes about 4 improvements, in addition to faster navigation updating speed (includes quicker rerouting).

• Starred Items

You can star items (basically adds favorites) to navigate to later. It is also able to be synchronized with online Google Maps (not sure how, so I won't go into details there).

• Easier to find places previously searched.

Start typing a name of a place in your Google widget and it will ask if you'd like to navigate to that place.

• Night mode

It's actually more of a scene mode I think. As time goes on (and it becomes darker) the display on the phone (while navigating) becomes darker as the outside becomes darker. Obviously they've made it to not effect street names and such, but it looks pretty cool. It is not effective in doing what it is supposed to do. The intent of the night mode is to make less of a glare while night navigating...failure.

• Multi-touch/PINCH TO ZOOM

This is a great improvement for Google Maps. It works great while using the basic map app but DOES NOT work while navigating. I think this should have been included (not that you should be pinching anything while driving).


I think I'm going to include something kind of unrelated in this post........

The CAR DOCK for the DROID has been reformulated/redesigned. The original car dock basically mounted to the window, then your phone simply was pressed into a semi charger looking desktop holder looking thing...hard to describe...it was just placed IN this holder. It also nicely went into Car Docking mode automatically when placed in this dock. The new Dock really isn't a dock at all. It still mounts to the window, but now there's an attachable case that comes with the dock. This case goes on the phone (and has an optional swivel holster attachment) and this dock has you insert a knob (on the back of the case, where the holster attachment would normally be) into the dock part at the end and it slides down and simply attaches to the dock...this allows the ability to attach and remove the phone more effectively. It DOES NOT switch into auto docking car mode when attached. Something is the same: THE PRICE. $29.99 + tax.
