Android is open source and IOS is closed source. people say open source is best because it is open source and other like closed source apple.

Basically what it boils down to is that Apple makes it so you can only use Apple and/or Apple approved software on their devices. This means you have to purchase all of your apps from iTunes, you cannot get them from other sources like Amazon, etc. With open source software you can get your content from anywhere.

Droidluvr nailed the answer. Apple makes you buy only Apple products, that's why I prefer not to buy their stuff if I can choose open source.

Open source also allows devs to design custom ROMs and kernels so people can have different versions of Android on their phones.
