The final test for the HTC One is the oh so popular Apple iPhone 5. Though Apple supporters have remained loyal to their brand even when the manufacturer hasnít changed too much in the last few years, it will only be a matter of time before loyalists too realize that Apple is just reproducing the same phone with minor changes year after year. And if Apple wants to maintain their position in the market they will have to do something new and exciting very soon. Anyway, the Apple iPhone 5 does feature a larger screen and better camera than the older versions of the phone but is that really enough? We have already seen the HTC One give tough competition to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and come out on top against the Nokia Lumia 928. But, how does it stand up against the Apple iPhone 5? Read on to find out...

    1. Size and weight - In terms of both size and weight, there really is no manufacturer that can compete with Apple. Even though they compromise somewhat on the battery size because of this, weighing in at 112 grams, it is safe to say that the iPhone 5 is the lightest smartphone in the market today. Also in terms of size. The iPhone 5 is thinner and smaller than the HTC One as well. Apple knows what needs to be done in this segment and I doubt many other smartphones will be able to compete with it. One point to Apple.

    2. Display - In terms of display, the HTC One has one of the most outstanding displays in the market today. It has a pixel density of 468 ppi spread over its 4.7Ē screen and the 326 ppi spread over its 4Ē screen just canít compare. The viewing experience on the HTC One is just spectacular and the S-LCD 3 technology is miles ahead of the IPS LCD on the iPhone 5. HTC managed to beat both Samsung and Nokia for this point and it doesnít seem like anything is going to change here. One point for HTC.

    3. Memory & Storage - This is an aspect where I will have to rank both manufacturers as equals. While the iPhone 5 does have more storage options (it comes in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions) the HTC One has double the RAM. In my personal opinion, both phones function just as well and the 26 GB user memory on the HTC One is more than enough for any smartphone user. Therefore, this point is a tie.

    4. Camera - The HTC One severely underperforms in this segment as we have seen against both the Nokia Lumia 928 and Samsung Galaxy S4. The 4 MP camera on the HTC One just canít compare. It kind of reminds me of a couple of years ago when Apple were still stuck with underperforming cameras. Hopefully, HTC will take a page from Appleís book and work on improving their cameras. Little surprise here, the point goes to Apple.

    5. OS & Performance - The HTC One is supposed to get an update to Android 4.2.2 (Jellybean) sometime in June 2013. But even Android 4.1.2 (Jellybean) isnít half bad. Although iOS 6 is an exceptional operating system, it is just a matter of preference when it comes to determining the better operating system. I for one donít appreciate Appleís interface. But, there will be others who are willing to bet their life on it. I will leave this one open to the public. Which do you think is better? iOS 6 or Android Jellybean?

    6. Battery - It is a fact that the iPhone 5 doesnít have a great battery backup. It must take some guts to release a phone with a 1,440 mAh battery when everyone else has 2,000 mAh + batteries. This is probably what they had to compromise with for making the phone so compact. After all, you canít have everything can you? The HTC One, on the other hand, provides hours of battery life and can easily be enjoyed for more than a day with moderate to heavy use. No doubt which manufacturer gets this point.

    7. Price - This is the last comparison point and the chances donít look too good for Apple here either. You can get a new (contract free) HTC One for just $ 328.50. But, if you want an Apple iPhone 5 (without contract), get ready to dish out at least $ 650.00. Pricing is definitely one of HTCís strong points and I havenít yet been able to find a smartphone that provides users with better value for money. HTC wins this point as well.

This is the third conclusion I am writing for the HTC One and so far it has managed to put on a really impressive show. Even here, the score reads 3-2 in favor of HTC. I must admit, the HTC One has really been a revelation for me in these past few days. It stood up to the Galaxy S4, thrashed the Lumia 928 and now beats the iPhone 5. If only it had a better camera on the back, I would get rid of my Lumia 920 and head to the store right away. And since my Lumia is pretty new, I could probably sell it, buy the HTC One and still have some money to spare. Thatís truly amazing!!!

Re: HTC One vs Apple iPhone 5

I just wanted to add here that the HTC One doesn't cost $ 328.50 as mentioned above. It costs $ 640 which makes the score 2 points each. This makes me wonder whether it is worth it anymore...
