Data Backup

Backing Up Applications:

  1. While on the home screen, tap the "Applications" icon
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Tap "Backup and reset". NOTE: you need to be logged in with a Google account in order to back up applications. You can tap "HTC account" > "Add account" and follow the on-screen instructions to log in or create a Google account
  4. If necessary, mark the check boxes associated with "Backup my data" and "Backup account"

Backing Up Contacts:

  1. Open the "People" application
  2. Access the "People" tab and tap the "Menu" icon
  3. Tap "Manage contacts" > "Import / Export contacts"
  4. Tap "Export to phone storage"
  5. Select an account and tap "OK"

Backing Up Media Files on a Windows Computer or Mac:

  1. Use the USB cable to connect your HTC One (M8) to your computer
  2. If you're using a Windows machine, click "Open device to view files using Windows Explorer" in the "AutoPlay" window. If you're on a Mac, double-click the virtual drive icon that should pop-up on the desktop
  3. Navigate your phone's memory and locate the desired files
  4. Copy the desired files
  5. Navigate to the location where you want to back up your files on your computer, and paste the files there
  6. Once the transfer is complete, safely disconnect your smartphone:
    • On a Windows machine, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon located in the system tray and click to "Eject"
    • On a Mac computer, drag and drop the virtual drive icon in "Trash / Eject"
  7. You can now safely disconnect the USB cable

Restoring Data

Restoring Applications:

  1. Tap the "Apps" icon located on the home screen
  2. Tap "Settings" > "Accounts & sync"
  3. Press the "Menu" key and tap "Sync all"

Restoring Contacts from the Storage:

  1. Launch the "People" application
  2. Go to the "People" tab and tap the "Menu" icon
  3. Tap "Manage contacts" > "Import / Export contacts"
  4. Select "Import from phone storage"
  5. Choose the type of account and restore your contacts

Restoring Media Files from a Windows or Mac Computer:

  1. Establish a connection between your smartphone and computer via USB
  2. On a Windows machine, an AutoPlay window should appear. Click "Open device to view files using Windows Explorer". On a Mac computer, double-click the virtual drive icon from the desktop
  3. Navigate to where the media files are backed up on your computer
  4. Copy the desired files, and paste them on your phone's storage
  5. Once the transfer is complete:
    • On a Windows PC, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon from the system tray and click to "Eject" the device
    • On a Mac computer, drag the virtual drive icon and drop it into "Trash / Eject"
  6. You can now disconnect your smartphone from the computer
