Possible to unklock HTC TP and use with Boost/Virgin mobile prepaid??

Here's my situation.. I'm a student attending an American university from Canada. I've wanted an HTC Touch Pro ever since it was released. However, none of the providers that require a contract offer anything that would work for me -- I'm home in Canada for 4 months out of the year, and don't want to pay for a yearly contract if i'm not going to be able to use it 1/3 of the year.

So, after going through almost all the providers, I've realized that my best option is to keep my Virgin Mobile prepaid service (or change to the new Boost unlimted one..) and just get service while I'm here in university. However, I still want the TP!

Now, I'm wondering.. is it possible to get a TP from ebay or something.. and then somehow use that with my prepaid plan from Boost or Virgin? I don't need the data plans (I'm on campus with WIFI everywhere), but would like the phone.

Any suggestions? Is this possible?

I completely understand what you're trying to do! Unfortunately, Boost is an iDEN network and is incompatible with that phone. While Virgin is theoretically compatible (CDMA), it's unlikely that they'll allow the phone on their network. You could try to call them to see if that's possible, but I'm not optimistic.

I know MetroPCS does reflash phones, so you might check them out to see if they meet your needs, though I would check with them first before buying the phone.

Boost may be an option. They do allow you to use CMDA phones on their network if you have one of their unlimited plans. They just don't allow it for their pay as you go plans. I recently had my Treo 700p from Sprint (CMDA) flashed and moved to Boost.

The big problem you may have is finding a Canadian carrier. if you want it to be a local "canadian" phone then it would have to be flashed again to that carrier. When you return to the US, it would have to be flashed again back to Boost.

For this reason a Fuse from AT&T (same phone) from AT&T or getting an unlocked one online (GSM). You would then just need to get a SIM card for US and a SIM card for Canada, and change them out on your own. I dont know if there are many prepaid GMS in Canada.

That's interesting. I wasn't aware that reflashing would be possible to get a phone on Boost. My understanding is that they have a list of authorized/valid ESNs, and if the phone type does not match the allowed type, it won't be activated (or stay activated).

Some companies do allow reflashing, and in fact will help you do it (and charge you ;-). MetroPCS is a good example.

Anyway, let us know how it works out. I personally feel that reflashing without a prior commitment from the carrier that it will work is a risky proposition, but that's just me.

I'm not sure if anyone answered this thoroughly - so I'll complete the answer. It is YES you can - on BOOSTMobile.- but not with a SIM CARD

Boost's network is iDen - therefore their SIMs only work on iDen phones (boost/Nextel).
Boost has new CDMA phone - which means you can flash over a TP2 onto Boost - but it has to be the SPRINT version of the TP2 - not the T-Mobile, Verizon, ATT, etc.

I currently have a TP2 8GBsdc with Boost's Unlimited $50 month plan. No taxes, no extras. My phone works on Sprint's 3G NOW network. Here's what works on my TP2 via Boost: Phone/VM/CallerID, Email (outlook, aim, hotmail, POP3), Text messaging (SMS & MMS) including picutre messaging), Internet (3G & Wifi), Internet sharing/wifi router, GPS (sprint or google), auto Weather/stocks updates, Bluetooth, NFL channel / ESPN via Sprint TV, Netflix, live NBA via Yahoo. The TP2 also offers programs for everything - including business/school with it's windows os. Marketplace downloads are fast and easy - it has a great reader program/books download, adobe, word, excel, SIM manager, MP3 trimmer to customize ringers, MP3 player, camera/video, pic caller id, and microsoft my phone.

As for Canada - I think it should work out there - without roaming charges (boost unlimited doesn't have them - international calling is included). I was in Vancouver BC and my phone worked great. Nevertheless, there is a SIM slot in the phone for Intl Roaming - but has to a GSM Sim card - an iDen (Boost) won't work on this phone.

Infinity Mobile has some pretty great plans for PrePaid HTC phones - no taxes, no fees, etc. I'm using the HTC Diamond with their unlimited talk/text $59.99 plan and it's been GREAT. Check out www.infinitymobile.com
