WARNING! By master resetting your phone, you will remove all personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory, including applications, contacts, media files and ringtones, downloaded content etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values. However, data located on the SIM and SD cards will not be removed.

NOTE: Before you master reset the device, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up data, and this thread for a guide on how to restore data. Additionally, you can visit this thread for instructions on backing up and restoring data locally or via HTC Backup.

Master Reset via Settings:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Access “Settings
  3. Under “Personal”, tap “Backup & reset
  4. Enable or disable “Backup my data” and “Automatic restore
  5. Tap “Reset phone
  6. In case your device is protected by a lock screen, enter your PIN / password to proceed
  7. Optionally, you can enable “Erase SD Card”. WARNING! By doing so you will lose all data on the SD card during the reset process
  8. At the “Warning” pop-up, tap “OK
  9. Press “OK” again to confirm and wait for the device to reset and reboot

Master Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise you are unable to reset your device via Settings, you can try factory resetting it via the Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. First, turn off the device
  2. Press and hold “Volume down
  3. Next, press and hold “Power
  4. Once the phone vibrates, release “Power
  5. Once you should gain access to “hTC download mode”, release “Volume down” too
  6. Navigate the menu by pressing “Volume down” repeatedly
  7. Highlight “reboot to bootloader” and press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  8. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Boot to recovery mode
  9. Press “Power
  10. When an exclamation mark appears on the screen, press and hold “Power”, and then press & release “Volume Up
  11. Once you gain access to “Android system recovery”, release all hardware buttons
  12. Press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate to, and highlight “wipe data / factory reset
  13. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  14. Once the reset is complete, “Reboot system now” should be highlighted
  15. Press “Power” one last time to restart your device

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After you factory reset your device, it’s recommended to verify if newer software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Scroll to “Phone” and tap “About
  3. Tap “Software information” and check if a new update is available
  4. If necessary, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply the update
