WARNING! When you factory reset your device, all your personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory will be deleted, including media files, contacts, ringtones etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values but data stored on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected.
NOTE: You can check this thread for a guide on backing up data, and this guide for restoring data.
Factory Reset via Settings:
- Go to “Settings”
- Scroll to “Personal”
- Tap “Backup & reset” and optionally, enable or disable “Automatic restore” and “Back up my data”
- Tap “Reset phone”
- If necessary, enter your password/PIN to proceed
- Optionally, you can choose to “Erase SD card”
- When ready, tap “OK”
Factory Reset via Recovery:
NOTE: If your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via Settings, you can try resetting it from the Recovery menu.
- First turn the phone Off
- Then, press and hold “Power” and “Volume down” simultaneously
- Release “power” when the phone vibrates
- Release” Volume down” at the “hTC download” screen
- In this menu, press “volume down” repeatedly to navigate to and highlight “Reboot to bootloader”
- Press “Power” to select the option
- Use the volume keys to highlight “Boot to Recovery Mode”
- Press “Power”
- At the “no command” screen, press and hold “Power” and “Volume down” at the same time
- Once in Recovery, release the buttons
- Navigate the recovery menu using the volume key and highlight “Yes – delete all user data”
- Press “Power”
- Once done, highlight “Reboot system now” and press “Power” one last time
