Just dumped Cricket Aircard when my 5GB shrunk 50% to 2.5GB and they
wanted $10 MORE, a 20% increase, for 5GB/mo. 5GB on a netbook is
nothing. Screw cellular companies and this bull****. We've found a much
better way.
Open the Amazon webpage above and Welcome to high-powered wifi!
This little cheap box stuck to the window of most any diner is simply
uncanny! It has a 200mw (FCC measured, not ad hyped) wifi transceiver in
it with a great receiver coupled to a REAL high gain omnidirectional
antenna that's AWAY from all the RF racket of your
netbook/notebook/laptop that scrambles the weak signals on the ****ty
internal wifi behind the noisy LCD screen with its crappy power output
and non-existant antenna.
Great software comes with the little bugger that makes connection and
antenna positioning for fastest throughput, miles faster than ****ty
cellular "broadband", very easy to setup. You can still use your little
internal wifi for local hotspot connectivity at home or if the place
you're setup has free wifi inhouse. But, no problem if they don't. You
can connect and USE anyone's wifi you can see from that diner
window...and many you can't! It will connect to wifi hotspots way across
the biggest parking lot, even to buildings you can't see!
Costs NOTHING to use. Free wifi is all over the place, IF you can get TO
it. Now you can....(c;] Waste $37 and give it a try. It won't work
moving down the road, but it sure beats their ass on speed any place it
finds even a weak signal....
Aircards all suck....

PS - Ubuntu and Ubuntu for Netbooks both recognize the Alfa USB adapter
right out of the box without any external software. Just plugnplay and
when you click up your wifi icon at the top you'll see BOTH the internal
wifi and the Alfa card connecting simultaneously, which isn't gonna work!
Just disconnect the internal card's connection and the Alfa card will be
the connection used. I still haven't found a way to shut down the internal
after Ubuntu Linux disabled all my Fn control keys, one of which did shut
down my internal wifi radio, but no longer functions.
Any Ubuntu gurus help greatly appreciated....(c;]

yeah I've been reading up on that little unit as well!
might have to give it a go...

antenna?

Both! The deal from Amazon includes the addon mounting bracket and the
$10 9dbi antenna, in addition to the 5dbi antenna the unit is shipped
with. All for $37.
Used it several times, today, all the way across a huge shopping center
parking lot in one place that had no wifi. Thanks, Chick-Fil-A for the
signal!

By the way, you can get the schematic and all the FCC measurement data on
the 036NH here:
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/...bitReport.cfm?
mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=730618
&fcc_id=%27UQ2036NH%27
Notice they measured 200mw, not 2000mw (which is illegal in the USA over
1 watt). FCC approved because it was under 1 watt output. Full test
report is on the various pieces with the full 036NH schematic...very
nice.

No it's not. works on b or g or n just fine.

That looks ok but a half solution. If you really wanna leach wifi I am
using something like this. Mine is a much older Engenius directional
unit- an EOC=3220 Plus.
It's really a strong solution. And it does your whole local network.
$75. I am picking up networks up to 3 miles away, with the antenna
stuck to a window with velcro.

Nice unit but not quite as portable, right?

I suppose that depends on where you live. Kind of like T-Mobile's "4G
speed" network advertisements - my phone's capable of it, but I've never
actually seen it.

My fav Pizza joint has Knology Cable free wifi. 12Mbps down, 3 Mbps
up...no charge. I've been promoted to "systems operator" because I knew
how to logon to the Cisco router and put the pizza joint's name in
SSID....(c;] Two weeks ago, I logged into it and did a firmware upgrade
for lunch. It's the fastest public wifi in Charleston, SC. A piece of
tin foil stuck to the wall behind the router antenna put a stop to the
neighborhood behind the restaurant using it for their home internet
service after I found them in the log. I also lowered the signal by
burying the antenna behind the equipment so it barely makes it to the
edge of the parking lot, reducing the traffic load so only the customers
can hit it.
12Mbps isn't peak speed.....it's solid! Great little place to have a
pizza and system update on your portables.....(c;]
Nothing is throttled, blocked, slowed down or other Verizon nonsense on
Knology....anywhere in their system. Fantastic ISP at my home on this
message. Knology includes 10 simultaneous ports with no throttling or GB
limits on usenetserver.com.....even at the pizza shop! Drop in, download
some new movies or music from usenetserver to play in the car. Plug in
your uncrapped MP3 player that DOESN'T use iTunes or some other crapware
and load MP3s to it like an external hard drive straight from your usenet
NNTP client. I use Grabit from shemes.com for usenet binaries. Works
great at pizza shop.....all free to the customers.
Verizon can kiss my ass.....

Apparently, very few can enjoy the speeds Larry alleges.
Per http://www.knology.com/page/internet
"Knology Internet speeds of 12Mbps downstream/2Mbps upstream*
*Currently available in Huntsville, AL Augusta, GA Panama City,
FL and Charleston, SC."
Hardly what I'd call big market cities. It's obvious they're far from
supporting that speed system-wide. And speaking of their system,
unless you live in one of the following areas, you aren't going to get
Knology anyway. Not much of a system. IMO.
Dothan, AL
Huntsville, AL
Montgomery, AL
Valley, AL
Panama City, FL
Pinellas County, FL
Augusta, GA
Columbus, GA
Lawrence, KS
Charleston, SC
Rapid City, SD
Sioux Falls, SD
Knoxville, TN

It's not a portable solution.
But it is a strong solution.

What's not "portable"? It weighs 2 oz and uses a mini/A USB cable to the
netbook. I'm using it in a restaurant typing this....to a hotel 1/4 mile
away!
