I have a Nokia 3100 (world phone), and my wife is traveling to Europe next
week. How are these calls billed? Let's do a cost/benefit analysis! I
suspect that a phone card would be the best bet, but I can't find out (don't
want to spend hours w/ cust serv, info not online) from Cingular.
Can a traveller tell me how this gets billed? Is it worthwhile?
She'll only make a couple of calls, it's not like we're newlyweds, after
    all.

OUCH !! That may be more Convenient, but it WILL BE FAR AND AWAY THE
    MOST EXPENSIVE solution.

    Again, ask your travel agent.

The best way that I"ve found when I'm oversea's is to just but a sim
chip when I"m over there. Its alot cheaper then using cingular. Of
course you need to have your phone unlocked, but this is the best way to go

    Re: Travel in Europe

Cheaper yet ( depending on where you are going) buy the European SIM before
leaving the US from a discounter such as http://www.directdeals999.com/.
Air mailing a SIM from Europe to the US takes about a week.
But, again, you need to get your worldphone unlocked or get on ebay some
such and buy a 900-1800 MHz unlocked phone.
The Ericsson R520m is one such phone. It's discontinued but there are quite
a few still in the pipeline. It is an excellent full-featured (i.e.,
Bluetooth, GPRS, but mono display) It also has the 1900 US GSM band in
addition to the two European ones.
If there is a reason to buy a locked world phone from Cingular -- or anyone
else -- it sure eludes me..

All "world-capable" phones from Cingular are shipped Unlocked from the
manufacturer. This is well documented in this group.

It protects you against someone stealing your phone, taking a summer
vacation in Europe, and running up the minutes at your cost. Happens
    all the time :-)
