Back when orange and blue were different companies, I had a Cingular
account. I got it through the local Cingular corporate rep, and I got a
    corporate discount.

Then one day I decided I wanted my wife to have a phone. I called my
Cingular rep, who told me that Cingular didn't do corporate discounts on
family plans. He told me my choice was to go to a retail store and sign
up for a retail plan if I wanted a family plan.

    Harumph. No, thanks.

I stumbled upon ATT Wireless and their foundation account system for
corporate discounts. My company has such a discount. I gave them my
email address and zip code, and they sent me to our corporate pricing
page. I got one heckuva deal: $89.99 for 2000 minutes, and $8.99 for
the additional line to share them with.

It was so good, in fact, that it was there on a Saturday night when I
signed up for it, but gone the following Monday. Later on I had to call
customer service a couple times, and send them my emailed receipt, to
get the full 2000 minutes. Apparently the day after I signed up, the
deal went down to 1600 minutes.

The 7pm nights/weekends and unlimited mobile to mobile is very nice, and
my wife having access to it all is really very nice.

As a huge bonus, ATTWS service in the area I travel in is EXCELLENT.
Plus, a bunch of my close co-workers were on ATTWS, so I got great
mobile to mobile service for free.

Fast forward to today. I'm poking around for a friend, seeing what
today's deals are. Hallelujah! The corporate discount thing is still
done on the old ATTWS site, although Cingular has mucked around with it
a bit (no more "GSM America," it's now called "Business National Plans,"
    for example).

And look: the $89.99 plan, which was 2000 minutes one day back in June
but went down to 1600 minutes ever since, is now showing 1600 minutes
WITH 450 PROMOTIONAL MINUTES. Damn, what a deal.

Ah--but this is for one line.

So, I hit the button to show that 2 people would share on this account.
    The screen changes, and.....

.......the 450 bonus minutes are GONE. $89.99 buys you only the base
1600 minutes, period. And the extra line is now $9.99/month.

Back to showing only one line on the account, and the 450 minutes are
    back.

Looks like Cingular has a corporate policy that strongly discourages
family plans on corporate discount accounts.

I have my ATTWS account, thank you very much, and I even went ahead and
picked up a couple extra ATTWS phones and SIM cards just so I wouldn't
be forced later on to replace a broken phone or SIM with a Cingular
piece at the all-new, all-higher Cingular rates.

So much for Cingular, in my mind. If I need to make a change, chances
are I will look around VERY closely at the competition. Cingular isn't
giving me any warm and fuzzies so far.

Certainly Cingular is always allowed to charge whatever it wants, but I
went to the web sites to compare prices, which had been cheaper on
Cingular web sites. And Today 12/4 the ATTWS website redirects to the
Cingular website as it did on Nov. 15. At least for Texas zipcodes.

Cingular doesn't offer corporate discounts for family plans? How come?
Could it be because family plans are intended for personal use while
corporate discounts are intended for business use?
Geez.....what's next? A diatribe about how "awful" it is that his
employer won't let him use the corporate jet for visits to his in-laws?

Many companies that offer Corporate Accounts have a "Friends and Family"
option. This provides a lesser disount than the Corporate Account but is
still better than what you can get on the street. The advantage of this is
to expand the number of customers at an incremental cost to the company.
Many companies realize that your best saleman is a happy and satisfied
    customer.
