AT&T (recently purchased by SBC who holds 60% of Cingular) has announced
plans to purchase BellSouth (who owns 40% of Cingular). The new company
will be called AT&T and Cingular will change it's name to AT&T as well.
Hope they didn't throw out all those old signs yet!

Re: ATT Wireless returns - Cingular is history
It was going to be called at&t (lowercase) even before the purchase of
BellSouth. It was all over CNN several months ago.

I know, it's really only a name change.

No Cingular name change was announced previously.

Re: ATT Wireless returns - Cingular is history
I am afraid this merger will reduce the competition, and increase our cell
phone rates. AT&T wireless has been at the bottom of the list in Consumer
Reports for quite a while. I dropped them as my long distance carrier
because they would quote me a price, then raise it a month later without
even telling me. The increase just appeared on my bill. When I called, they
said it made no difference what price I was quoted to get me to go with
them. They were free to change the price at will. I hope they improve their
service. I would think the wireless coverage will probably improve, but at a
greater cost for everything. Charles Ranheim

AT&T Wireless has never been a long distance carrier. AT&T Wireless has
not been part of AT&T for many years. The acquisition of AT&T wireless
by Cingular, is not the same as the acquisition of AT&T by SBC, or the
proposed acquisition of Bell South by AT&T, formerly SBC.

How so? The number of cell carriers will stay the same.

The logo and branding have changed.

That was only a reference to branding of Cingular-provided service by the "new
at&t", not a name change for Cingular itself.
What I actually wrote
<http://groups.google.com/group/alt.cellular.cingular/msg/eb8938c03948598f>
was:
While SBC is assuming the AT&T name, AT&T Wireless may refer only to
wireless service sold by "the new AT&T" -- see "AT&T To Sell Branded
Wireless" <http://www.wirelessweek.com/article/CA6285901.html>
"This is not a surprise, because when the Cingular joint venture was
created, we anticipated (our parents) might want to offer wireless
services under their own brands," says Cingular Wireless spokesman
Mark Siegel. Cingular is a joint venture of AT&T (formerly SBC) and
BellSouth Corporation. Cingular acquired AT&T Wireless last year.
"Mr. Whitacre's comments changes in no way how we will market
Cingular. Our size and national presence is an advantage for our
parents," Siegel says.
