I have a Motorola V557 with Cingular as my provider. I want to get one
of these $10 dial-up ISP's and connect my laptop to the Internet via
    the cell phone.

I have the USB cable and the Motorola modem driver and it seems to
    connect OK.

I tried PeoplePC Online and the mobile phone dials them up, then then
it quickly disconnects. PeoplePC tech support says cell phones don't
    work with their service.

Question 1: can my hardward connect to a dial-up ISP?
Question 2: Which dial-up ISP would support such a thing?

    Thank,
    Kevin

I don't recall the technical reasons, but the short answer is no, you will
not be able to use a dial up account from your mobile phone. If you are
looking for a cost effective method to connect your PC via your phone, you
can sign up for Cingular's Media Net (unlimited $20 per month). Having said
that you need to be aware that Cingular prohibits you doing this
(http://www.cingular.com/media/media_legal). As long as you do not download
too much data you will probably get away with it. In other words keep below
their radar. For more information on configuring Media Net see, John Navas's
    web site at:

I actually tried Media Net. The phone tried to log in and returned a
message saying that I had to have the "Data option". I called Cingular
tech support and they confirmed that MediaNet wouldn't work with laptop
Internet; I would have to get the laptop Internet option which is
unlimited for $59. Way too much for an occasional use.

It *WILL* work, they intentionally mislead you.

    http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cingular_Wireless_FAQ will help you.

BUT....you do risk getting hit with data charges.

You could just drop the $19/mo MediaNet, and that way its only $39/mo
extra to your bill for the data plan.

On a side note...I noticed that when I had Cingular removed from a
client's phone and added the data plan, he could no longer connect using
[email protected] as the user name and had to use
    [email protected] or [email protected].

Calling tech. support is not an option, as it is not a supported feature. I
am afraid you are on your own, except for the friendly folks in this group
    :-).

Not exactly. You can use a dial up account (via the phones data menus
NOT just by dialing the ISP!) if you have CSD (Circuit Switched Data -
comes out of minutes - very slow as in 9600) enabled on the account --
the problem appears to be finding a CSR that 1) knows what the heck
you're talking about and 2) knows how to add it to a GSM account. There
was some reports that the system would no longer accept the feature
codes to add it to a pure GSM account. It still works on a GAIT account
both on the GAIT phone and on a GSM-only one--mine got disabled awhile
back and it took me days to get it going again--had to ***** until I got
a tech level person who solved it in about 30 seconds. But--I'm now
seeing two entries on the bill, one for "wireless internet express" for
$2.54 and another for "wap-my wireless window" at $3.99. CSD was
supposed to be $3.99 so maybe WIE isn't needed if you use your own ISP--
I haven't had time to experiment.

I've also seen conflicting reports here about CSD is included in the
MediaNet packages--some said it is and some say it isn't. If the error
message the OP got about "having to have a data option" is the one I
think it is it's so vague as to be meaningless--I get it sometimes and I
can reboot and try again and it goes thru. Can anyone confirm they can
use CSD with just a MediaNet package?

I have something they call PDACnctUntlAdd for 39.99/month. My Treo will
access the internet fine using either the isp.cingular and wap.cingular
settings. (I've not noticed any difference.) Would using DUN incurred
the wrath of Cingular or is that covered?

I think misled is the wrong words. If Cingular states everywhere you are
not supposed to do it and you call them and ask them to help you do it then
they should say something to the effect that Cingular does not support that
and I can not support that.

The CSD - like the mobile fax - are not offered by Cingular any more and can
not be provisioned on accounts. If you have it you can keep it but
    otherwise SOL

Well...how about the Cingular rep was incorrect in saying that it would
not work (from the technical stand point of it actually working in
reality), and then saying we don't allow it and won't support it.
