Saw a headline crawler on one of the cable news channels that Cingular was
going to impose a $5 monthly surcharge to non-GSM phone customers starting
in September.

Yep. Old news here. Not terribly surprising.

Not terribly surprising for a company that has no clue how to effectively
migrate customers from one platform to another. They are so deserving of
their latest JD Power ranking.

Bastards. Anyone know where I can sign up for a free/discount phone
without paying the $36 activation charge?

Wonder if us GAIT-plan users will get hit too? If I recall the GAIT
plans were already paying a premium over the standard ones at that time.
If so I'll have to pay it anyway--no way I can get by with a GSM-only
phone in TX yet--still far too many holes in rural areas.

Costco sells Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, and they don't charge an
activation charge.
Amazon has very good rebates that more than offset the activation
charge, you'll still come out ahead.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Unfortunately, they have rules that say you can't use it to replace an
existing service (even if you sign up for a "new" line, then cancel
your existing line).

Right, you would have to change carriers, but you can port your number
(except you cannot port from another carrier to Cingular, but you can
port to any of the other carriers from any of the carriers.

Actually it is. You'd think a big sophisticated company would understand
that the carrot is better than the stick getting people to change their
behavior. Offer an inducement to change phones, don't say if you don't,
we'll punish you.
Guess that tells you how much they care about their customers and what their
approach to them is.
Bet that's how the suits run the company too...glad I don't work there....

It offers the same inducements to them that it offers to everyone else.

Why should they get a better deal?

The company is clearly being run well.

They simply don't care if the few million remaining TDMA/AMPS customers
leave. They even stated that there will be a hit in regards to churn by
their action.
They probably have a good idea of the number of customers they'll lose
by this action. As long as it's not enough to make them lose their
number one spot in terms of number of subscribers, it's a way of ridding
themselves of low ARPU customers.

Actually, letters are going out now offering waived upgrade fees for TDMA
and TDMA/Gait customers. They'll it the door a full month before the 5 bucks
hits their bills. The VIP site also has "special deals" for some of those
customers on hardware. (Yes, those deals are tied to ARPU and profitability-
That's WHY you go into business, to make a profit, not as a public service)

Just do this:
- go to Sprint PCS Online (like I just did),
- pick a $29.99 Fair & Flexible plan,
- they'll have UPS drop it off in 3 business days. $36 fee waived.
- do indepdendent research on the various free and cheap CDMA/AMPS
phones. Some are bad, some are good.
- Forget local number portability to keep it simple and in case Sprint
doesn't work out.
I just got a Nokia 6016i. Backup plan was a Sanyo RL-4930 brick phone.
Once you try it out for a week, call up Stinkular, and tell them to
stick their $39.99 GSM plans up their ass.
