NEWS: Cingular Gets Approval for Acquisition Deal as Soon As 2004

Is it TMOBILE? Is it ATTWS? This is gonna be FUN!!

Cingular Wireless has gotten approval from its parent companies SBC
Communications and BellSouth to acquire another leading U.S. carrier. The
news means Cingular could acquire one of its rivals by as early as next
year. It has also sparked the latest round of "guess which carriers will
merge". Insiders are betting that Cingular will make a bid for either AT&T
Wireless or T-Mobile. T-Mobile's parent, Deutsche Telekom, has denied recent
merger rumors, saying it is dedicated to its U.S. operation. Most insiders
are currently betting on a Cingular/AT&T Wireless merger. Such a move would
create a North American GSM carrier with more than 40 million subscribers.

I just can't see the Fed's allowing an AT&T Wireless/Cingular
merger/aquisition.

Assuming the FTC allowed the merger.

Most possibly it wil be AT&T as TDMA and GSM are only offered by both these
National companies
Moreover T-Mobile is well funded gtom otherplaces and AT&T is laying off and
degrading service levels.
But Cingular sucks and so does AT&T so I see a bigger suck with them
combined.

The feds will do whatever big business wants, as long as there are still at
least two competitors.

If Cingular acquired AT&T it would clear the way for Verizon to put Sprint
out of its misery,
if it chose to. AT&T and Sprint are predicted to be the biggest losers from
number portability.

I've had great luck with Cingular. If you want to see service that
sucks, visit the native network of Verizon Wireless in North and South
Dakota. Or visit the network of Western Wireless. Or Sprint PCS. I
have a GAIT phone from Cingular, and it gets service in more places than
a CDMA phone from Verizon.

Actually, the Verizon/Sprint would be more complicated than one would
think. Verizon Communications would want to remain in control, but in
the event of a Verizon Wireless/Sprint PCS merger, if Vodafone acquired
Sprint PCS to contribute to the venture, it would now have control of
Verizon Wireless. If that happened, it would probably become Vodafone,
and a switch to from CDMA2000 1x EV-DO to W-CDMA would probably happen.
Plus, I think a huge overlay of GSM would happen.

Now, for a Cingular/ATTWS merger, it might not be as complicated. There
doesn't seem to be the tensions between SBC and BellSouth that there are
between Verizon Communications and Vodafone. I'm not sure how Cingular
would divvy up assets, whether between SBC and BellSouth, or whether
AT&T would come as a third player in the Cingular venture...

Actually, WW and Cingular would be a good marriage. There's no problem with
bandwith because WW and Cingular do NOT compete in most markets. There are
13 states in which Cingular has no coverage at all. WW was the company who
started VoiceStream (yes, they started it)

In those 13 states, WW has a HUGE footprint and could easily be a great
target for Cingular (although the population is primarily rural), but would
give them access to their own network and not paying WW for roaming (And WW
is running 3 standards now, that's gotta eat a lot of unused bandwidth)

You line in an area that is an exception....

In most areas of the country it is the EXACT opposite.
Example: out west Cingular SUCKS really badly.
VZW kicks their ass, hands down. NO contest.

Classic argument guys..

Every cell provider sucks somewhere - It's wireless - It will never be 100%

I guess the best guidance is find a provider that works good in your area
and is affordable.

Where I live Nextel is the best coverage but they are just too damn
expensive...Verizon is a close second in coverage but, again, too
expensive..

I personally have not seen this rumor anyplace but here, but it does make
sence. About a year or two ago T-Mobile was in talks with Cingular to merge.
Also the way AT&T is going in this area, I don't think they want to be
bought out by anyone. They seem to be moving strong. If I had to make a
guess, I would say it is T-Mobile.

The "feds" also broke up AT&T back in '84. They wont allow a merger
between Cingular and AT&T, it would destroy T-Mobile.

Well if Verizon bought SPCS, then it wouldn't get the entire Sprint network
as much of the network outside the biggest markets is not owned by Sprint
but smaller affiliates like Alamosa PCS, Ubiquitel, US Unwired, etc. A SPCS
buyout would kill the smaller guys and millions of folks who used to have
"Sprint" would then have nothing. I don't think Sprint PCS will ever be
part of another company unless some company were to buy both Sprint PCS and
the other Sprint divisions.

Verizon Communications will not give up control of Verizon Wireless.
It won't happen. It is their future growth vehicle. If SprintPCS was
acquired for Verizon Wireless, it would be acquired by Verizon
Wireless partnership, not by Vodafone. Verizon Comm. would not allow
Vodafone to "contribute" anything to the partnership that would give
Vodafone control.

Verizon Communications is quite comfortable with the situation as it
stands, but would be willing to buy out Vodafone, if necessary.
Vodafone is the party that is evidently unhappy with the current
situation. There is nothing they can arbitrarity do to wrest control
from Verizon Communications. If they wish to control a wireless
carrier in the U.S., they will need to divest their 45% of VZW and
pick up a different carrier.

In short, if there is to be a Vodafone Wireless in the U.S., it will
be competing with Verizon Wireless, not replacing it.

So that's the Verizon company line...
