Is it GAIT then 850 GSM, or is it 850 GSM then GAIT?

I have been thinking about cingular's strategy,
and one possible game plan came to mind.

Everyone, up to now, has been saying that GAIT is just a
temporary interim solution until they reach full GSM outlay.

But things don't look right for that strategy.

They was already started on the GSM conversion when they
started testing GAIT.

They released GAIT when they where pretty far along in
the conversion.

The GAIT phones had a few bugs, or a lot of bugs.
The GAIT support on the network had a few bugs too.
They have just pretty much fixed all the main bugs on the phones,
and they have gotten the bugs in the network fixed.

And now that they are closing in on finishing the installation of
GSM support in their network.
They have finally got all the bugs out of their GAIT system.
And now they publicly support GAIT phones on all their plans.

Not to mention the fact that ZARLINK had announced the development
of a single chip GAIT transceiver earlier this year.
Why would a company announce that they were going to start producing
An IC for a GAIT phone when people think that it will no longer be needed
by the time the IC starts production?

The ZARLINK chip will be more compact than a lot of single mode RF IC
chipsets.

And the ZARLINK chip will support GPRS and EDGE !!!!!!
It will support quad band operation.(800, 900, 1800, 1900)
Heck.. it can even do something that no other cellular RF chipset
could do before.
It could (theoretically) operate in analog mode on the 1900Mhz PCS
band without any modification.
Coolllllll, AMPS PCS!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

With this chipset, they could put GAIT operation in any cell phone.
A cell phone could be built with GAIT operation that supports
EDGE, GPRS, GSM, TDMA, and AMPS.
And it can be built in a flip phone design or any other design.
And it will operate off of a SIM card!
It will basically support all open standards.

Maybe GAIT is Cingular's idea of a new standard that they
will transition over to.

I wonder if they will ever come out will a
WCDMA, GSM, TDMA, AMPS phone?

Verizon is taking the one mode fits all idea.
Maybe cingular is taking the exact opposite plan.

All modes for one!
Lets unite! :-)

I shouldn't be saying "will" in the above stuff.
The ZL20250 is already in production.

I wouldn't mind seeing a GAIT PocketPC/Phone. My current PPC is having
a few problems and I've been considering swapping the SIM from the 6340i
into a pdaphone while in a GSM area. A GAIT model could be a total
solution.

One of the things stopping me is that Cingular's GPRS rates are too high
compared to much faster wireless services like Verizon. Doesn't EDGE
triple GPRS speeds? That would be a lot closer--assuming they don't
raise the rates to match.
