hello
a friend has loaned me an old voicestream ericsson t28 world phone, less the
cimm, for an upcoming trip to china. we thought all i needed to do was buy a
cimm in china and i'd be on the air. but then, i wondered if the phone was
locked by voicestream to prevent this occurence.
i'd appreciate your comments.
thanks.

Re: ericsson t28 world (unlock) question
If your friend is still with Voicestream ( now T-Mobile ), call 611 and they
will give you the unlock code for free.

Make sure your friend has the IMEI number from the phone before they call.

Re: ericsson t28 world (unlock) question
If you're not able to get your phone unlocked before your departure, you can
find a shop in China that will unlock it for you at a nominal fee.
Or you could simply buy a new mobile phone in China.

If it was sold by VoiceStream probably, if it was sold by Omnipoint,
maybe. I don't think VoiceStream every sold unlocked phones, but in
some cases they were willing to unlock them.
However most of the Omnipoint world phones were unlocked, you paid for
the honor, but they weren't subsidized. I have Motorola L7089 that I
bought from Omnipoint. No choice in the matter, it was unlocked (and I
was never an Omnipoint customer).

You can check whether the phone is locked or not by typing (from
ground display > * < < * < * (< and > being the arrow keys of
the menu bar). You get into the service menu. Chose "Service
info", then "SIMlock". You get a list of 4 or 5 items with a
padlock icon. If all 4 or 5 padlocks are open (look carefully, the
opening is only 1 pixel), then the phone is unlocked. If one (or
more) are closed, it's SIM-locked.
Works on any /// and S/// phone, btw.

thank you. the phone is SIM-locked, unfortunately.
perhaps i can find an unlock generator which will run from the IMEI code or
find someone in china to unlock it if i can't get it done here.

I guess finding someone to unlock it in China (in metropolitan
areas, of course) might be quite easy.

If the T28W was originally on VoiceStream it will be locked. You'll
need to request the unlock code if you wish to use any SIM (not CIMM)
in it.

that is what i have been told. in fact, since i first posted, a few people
contacted me and said that whatever place i purchased the new SIM would
probably do it gratis.
still, i admit it, i hate not knowing for sure. if i could do it here without
a cable, i would give it a try.

thank you. i've discovered how hard it is to get the unlock code from
voicestream since i am not the phone's original owner.
i've received a number of suggestions. the best seems to be wait until i get
to china and let the people i purchase the sim from unlock it, which i am
told they will do gratis.

Re: ericsson t28 world (unlock) question
I have been to China 2 or 3 times and I have had the experience of trying to get
a phone unlocked there. It did not happen for me.
I URGE YOU to have your friend get the unlock code from T-Mobile. If he still a
customer they will give it to him for free and not give him a hard time. All he
has to do is give them the IMEI number, you can find it under the battery.

Re: ericsson t28 world (unlock) question
Last November, I called T-Mo to unlock a Nokia 3390 that was used by a
former voicestream customer. In 2 days, they sent me an SMS with the Unlock
sode and procedure, and they also emailed it to me. They didn't even call my
friend (the former customer) to make sure if the phone was his. So its a
wonder they are giving you a run around.
