I got an offer in the mail today for a free Sony Ericsson T226 to replace my
T68i from AT&T WS. I was wondering why they are giving them away?

    A. New network technology that makes the older T68i obsolete.
    B. Attempt to improve service and customer retension by adding another type
    of network for better reception.
    C. An attempt to get me to sign a 1 year contract extension.

It's not an expensive phone. The t68 was a high priced phone a year ago,
but now the similar new models are cheap. Lots of places have the t226 for
very cheap. Same for the t300 if anyone has them left. Free is a good
price, but it's not insanely cheap.

t226 has better color and sound, but the t68 has IR and bluetooth
which may or may not be more important to you.
If they giving it to you free then take it, if they want the t68 back,
    i wouldn't. mo

If a sluggish menu system drives you nuts, then don't go for it.
Other than that, it's not too bad for a free phone. It's small,
light, not bad looking, and has a nice colored screen.

(Also keep in mind that it has no support for synchronizing it's
contacts with Outlook or Outlook Express even with a data cable, which
    they don't tell you.)

As I posted before, the offer is from Ericsson, not AT&T. They're
doing it to add the 850MHz band, and because they've had so many
    service problems with the T68i.

It is a decidedly downward trade in terms of features and value, if
Bluetooth and having a "World phone" matter to you. And you are
required to return the T68i in exchange for the T226.

I'm still trying to get them to swap for a T616 instead, even if I
have to pay extra. So far, no response.

    A t610 (or does AT&T have a t616?) would be a "real" upgrade.

I couldn't use the 226 either, no bluetooth.
I called ATT and got a t616 for $65 plus tax and shipping...not a great
deal, but I like the phone so far.

I know I'm late to this party, but I just dealt with this "upgrade"
and wanted to clear some things up:

No, it's _through_ Ericsson, but make no mistake -- AT&T is behind the
program. The Ericsson rep was quite specific that they get the list of
which customers to send the phones to from AT&T, and they have no
control over which customers get which phones.

    > They're doing it to add the 850MHz band, and because they've had so

AT&T is moving from 900Mhz to 850Mhz, not S/E. They are, in effect,
abandoning the world traveller market with this move, since world
tri-band phones need to have 900/1800/1900.

    > It is a decidedly downward trade in terms of features and value, if
    > Bluetooth and having a "World phone" matter to you.

This is true. The T226 is a step down in many ways from the T68i. Not
just the loss of Bluetooth and IR, but also contact management and
other functions are seriously cut down in the T226.

    > And you are required to return the T68i in exchange for the T226.

You're not, actually. As the AT&T rep told me, the T226 is a
"gift". When I complained about the lack of features, she suggested I
put the SIM in the T68i when I needed access to wireless data or if I
    travel outside the US.

    > I'm still trying to get them to swap for a T616 instead, even if I
    > have to pay extra. So far, no response.

If you complain enough (but be patient and polite), you will be
offered a T616, but you will have to pay $100, and agree to another
two year service contract. Remember, the T616 is 850/1800/1900, which
means it you might not get signal, depending on where you travel
    outside the US.

I called bull**** on AT&T, and have switched to T-Mobile. In the metro
DC and Maryland suburbs, coverage is at least as good as it was under
AT&T. Plus, the T610 is a true world phone. In March the combined
rebates from T-Mobile and Amazon came to $280, which is $80 more than
the $200 they wanted for the phone. I know the T630 is due here in a
month (or two?), but the T610 is a great phone and I just couldn't put
    up with AT&T any longer.

Plus, how could I say no to Catherine Zeta-Jones? :^)
