Is it possible to have a two way voice conversation over bluetooth
featured mobile phones without the use of gsm network? What is a
typical mobile phone bluetooth range and can it be easily extended
with insertion of an amplifier IC?
    thanks

Bluetooth is usually advertised as having a 10 meter range but to be honest
I've never got it to work *reliably* over about 5 meters. I dont see much of
    a market for walkie-talkies with a 15 foot range :-)

i guess class 2 (100m) devices would change that. although my t610 can reach
a BT signal from a floor above so even a 15ft range walkie talkie would work
well as an internal intercom thing...

i just dont think the mobile operators would allow the feature to be
included in a phone. i can imagine it taking a chunk of their revenue.

Motorola make a cellular phone which can also be used as a "walkie
    talkie" to a same-brand phone, i.e. back-to-back operation without
involving the network. It doesn't use bluetooth for this though.

You can get PMR radios for next to nothing, you would really be better with
    on of them!.

I don't see the point when 446MHz licence-free walkie talkies can be had
for 30 quid or so now.

The SE Z1010 is supposed to have a range of 100m for bluetooth, that
said my SE P800 is right next to my laptop and the laptop never seems
    to pick it up!!

Good concept, as with most things though seriously unreliable, even
    when paired with another device!

Typically, no. 2-way audio over bluetooth is perfectly possible
(that's how bluetooth headsets work), but it's generally not supported
by phone handsets. I don't know if that's a limitation of their
bluetooth chipsets, but it may just be a question of firmware.

    >What is a
    >typical mobile phone bluetooth range and can it be easily extended

Most bluetooth phones have a range of ~10m (class 2). You might get
some class 1 phones with a range of ~100m, but I doubt they are very
common. As ever with quoted ranges for rf kit that's best-case with
nothing between you and the receiver, real world range is usually
    worse.

I think it's more likely that phone manufacturers don't think people
want that capability (and with a ~10m range I can see why - you could
just shout!), rather than it being technically very difficult to do.

Bluetooth is a non-starter for this application, but what about PTT (push to
    talk) over GPRS?

i have tried "Visual communicator" for symbian OS mobiles. it doesnt work in duplex mode, as it
sends audio files with max. 10sec length, there is also a chat function. In order to establish the
conversation both phones need to have the software running.
At the moment its doesnt make sense to use it, unless you are in a foreign country which charges
heavily for roaming. Hopefully costs for data will be cut by providers in the near future!

    Of course it is.
While watching "Cold Case" on television last night, they appeared to be
using the SE 610(616) as a ptt or walkie talkie.
Television would never stretch the truth, so it must be doable.

Unless you don't want to carry around yet another device.

10 meters. Increasing the power output of a Bluetooth Transmitter
would probably violate the regulations involving the frequencies in
use, not to mention that increased output = interference for other
users. I think Bluetooth is limited to 1 milliwatt.

If you are talking about the NEXTEL products, they look like a walkie
talkie, they behaves like one, but they aren't. If the Nextel
network goes down, it works just like any other mobile when the
network is down. Not at all!!!

    Thanks everyone
I understand now as it is there is no option in your mobile under
bluetooth menu to just enter some Piconet with another bluetooth
mobile(instead of your headset) in say 100 m range and start talking
at least in half duplex? I do not really see why because you can
certainly exchange 'business cards' between the two and all it would
need is to send the voice coded signal to that bluetooth port(it has
enough bandwith for real time voice guaranteed )
Yes the companies make mobiles to suit operators specs but they also
should make the phones customers would like to have and having a
walkie talkie at no extra cost sounds great! Perhaps a little Java
    program could fix that...
