I wonder if you can help me.

I am trying to update the software (firmware) in my Sony Ericsson V800
    mobile phone.

I follow the instructions and everything goes okay until I get to the final
stage (I think its the final stage).
The stage I get stuck at is where the new software is being sent to the
    phone.
I get a dialog box with the message "Hold left button and press start",
underneath this is a greyed out percentage bar that once the update starts
    will show progress.
I read somewhere on the internet that the message means to press and hold
the left navigation key and press the power on key. I did this but nothing
happens. The progress bar is still greyed out data does not start sending to
    the phone.

Has anyone else tried to update the software (firmware) for their V800 or
    any other Sony Ericsson model?

Has anyone had the same problem I have?

Any idea how I can get it to work properly?

    I hope you can help.

I appreciate any help or information give.

    Thanks!

    Neil

Re: V800 upgrade problem - please help

    Hi Neil

i have had a similar problem with my P910i

I had tried off and on for weeks now and suddenly today it worked.

My instructions are different to yours most probably due to model, but
I would do everything as instructed and then came the BIG wait, with NO
    indication of any progress.

I tried leaving it for over an hour, i tried pushing more buttons maybe
I had missed some? Nothing worked!!! As I could not tell if anything
was going on in the background I was at a loss.

I have broadband so it could not be that either.

Today i did everything I had done before - it worked first time!! Until
it came time to transfer what had been downloaded onto my PC to the
phone, you have to remain connected whilst the transfer from PC 2 Phone
    is done.

I once again was not able to tell if anything was going on, this time I
decided I would not give up, I had gotten this far!!

After "back paging" a few times it eventually got going - BUT 3 times I
landed up with "uh oh" Sony Ericsson make great phones .... etc. etc.
which under any other circumstances would have been funny. i did not
find it slightly amusing to say the least.

I pushed on - eventually I had some indication of life when it notified
me that it was about to begin transfer from PC 2 Phone - thank G_d for
that as one of my worries was that it had written a certain amount to
    phone before stopping.

This was not the end though - after more of the same the transfer was
complete and I was instructed to remove my phone and continue.

I now question if it was a good move or not - the phone seems sluggish
now, even though a number of my apps are "missing" the funny thing is
that most of the missing "apps" are of the SMan / BlueEyes / Photo
Editor variety - these are all apps that allow you to peer that bit
    deeper into the system.

No well behaved, compliant app that just sat on the surface and did a
complimentary job to the phone has gone AWOL - is SE doing what M$ has
done with some of their "updates" used them to "kill-off" apps they
    were not too keen on??

No matter I have the originals and many back-ups of my phone.

Bottom-Line - if you are sure this is a good thing to do then push on -
do not assume "something" is going on - if you have waited what you
consider to be a decent time with nothing going on - it ain't - so
begin again, after perhaps allowing another minute or two ;-)

I had a very SIMILAR problem on my K750i (yours MIGHT be different though).

First, I had problems understandig that the phone needs to be connected
to the pc POWERED OFF AND keeping the "c" button pressed during connection.
Doing so (as opposed to connecting it as usual) is necessary so the
phone reports itself as a USB FLASH DEVICE (as opposed to "mass
storage"). Thie 1st time you do this, you are prompted for drivers
(which are NOT the ordinary usb drivers).

Second, my home PC could NOT complete the update... after installing the
update application, it quit with no message and no further action... the
    web page wouldn't change.
I'm reasonably sure i had a problem with my Java Virtual Machine.

I tried from my notebook (which boots a VERY clean copy of windows XP,
since i ususllay boot linux from it and never use Win) and it DID
complete successfully, installing (automatically) its own copy af java's VM.

    Hope this helps.

    regards, f.
