Hi,
I have a GC79 and a GC89. Both of which I am trying to get working in
two different laptops.
They work fine when I use the Sony Ericsson Wireless Connection
Manager. However, I need to have them set up via Dial-Up Networking
(DUN) so I can automate the process of bringing the connection up and
down.
They are on the T-Mobile service, if that matters.
I tried to dial *99***1#. It will connect, but sits at "registering on
network" for a long time and then reports either a "timeout" or
something about a failed response from the server.
I did the AT+GCDCONT.... command that sets the APN to
internet3.voicestream.com as profile 1.
I suspect that I need additional modem initialization commands to
properly make a connection.
Any help would be appreciated!!!

Oh yes! Good ole S/E cards! The apn you have a grip on but the strangest
oddity in the S/E cards is that it also takes an AT command to turn on the
radio which is what the software manager does when you launch it. I
believe all other brands start the radio as soon as they are plugged in
which makes sense. The command for that is AT+CFUN=1 this can only be a 0
or a 1, 1 is positive or on. The other part is registration AT+CGREG=1.
The biggest pain about this is that the startup will fail the first time
because it takes several seconds or more to power up the radio and let it
find a signal. I use a 30 second holdoff before redialing. The init string
can be concatenated into one string and it won't choke on it. Once you
pass the command to set the radio to ON, it will NOT turn the radio off
unless you unplug the card so the second time you pass the string, it
ignores the AT commands that are already active in the card's current
state and just dials and sets up the connection. It's basically a modem
with a built in serial port but unlike other cards, it uses just one port
for everything rather than a second port for information, signal strength
and the like.

try this. at+cgdcont=3,"IP","internet3.voicestream.com"
and dial *99***3#
the se card usually prefer cid 3 or higher when using a dun.
Also you may want to add at+cfun=1; to the front, if you do, drop the
second at. Windows will sometimes throw error 692 at you with the
second at in there.

That depends on how the card is configured.
