I just got mine Saturday. It is amazing! my t28w is history. If you like
to amuse yourself, this is it. Bluetooth works great. So far, I haven't
found any problems like you read in forums. Try it. If you don't like
it, just return it within 15 days! And my T616 was unlocked. Cingular is
da man!

I've had mine for a month or so.
Taking pictures and emailing them from the phone is a complete hoot,
the features and design are excellent. Fun toy.

That said, it has the worst rf performance of any cell phone I have
ever owned, and I've owned about 10. I have used it in 3 different
metro areas in California and New York city where I am quite familiar
with GSM coverage, and it has been a very bad experience. I have had
to consistantly throw my SIM card back into my Siemens S46 (which I
lock into GSM mode), which has no problems in exactly the same areas.

I just sent it out for a firmware upgrade (to the tune of $50) which
is supposed to improve RF performance and max volume (which is low). I
really hope it works, because otherwise the phone is a hoot.

If you are a heavy business user and talk more than 2 hours daily on
your cell this is probably not a good choice.

Hi,

The phone does have worse rf performance in 1900Mhz only areas (that's why
SE brought out the T616 = optimized for American networks), for the phone is
optimized for European networks (900 and 1800 MHz), with the ability to use
1900 MHz when it's really neccesary.

Secondly, here in Europe, Sony-Ericsson doesn't charge their customers for
fimware updates, for they see it as SUPPORT (after all it is: "updating" the
phone)! I doubt that they would change policy in US, so I guess you've sent
it to an unauthorized service provider (which of course can charge you to
their liking). Best is to call SE beforehand to get the adress of the
nearest SE service center and have them do it (takes about half an hour).

I do have a T616 and I am in the US - reception is abysmal.

Are you in an 1900 only area though? I picked up a t616 4 or 5 weeks ago.
It seems to have fine reception - at least on par with my previous reception
with a nokia 8290 on tmobile's 1900 network. I live in CT where cingular's
network is primarily on the 850 mhz gsm band.

I find that even when the signal bar says one of no bars i can still hold a
decent conversation.

I dunno about 1900-only. I use AT&T in Sonoma County, CA and recently
in Manhattan, and 'holding a decent coversation' would describe only
about 5% of my calls. Its horrible, in all the places the Siemens S46
in GSM mode, which I never considered exceptional, works fine.

BTW I just got the phone back from having the formware upgrade
performed.

The bars show much more strength, but the call quality isnt as
improved as the bars would indicate. The top volume is much higher,
however, which is much appreciated as it makes understanding a bad
call a bit easier :|

I understand that the T610 is optimised for we Europeans. MIne works great
here in the UK but there is supposed to be a problem with them in the USA.
