You should be able to, although you will only have access to GSM 1800 networks
which may have slightly worse coverage then the GSM 900 networks. You also have
to make sure that your home proivder has a roaming agreement with the GSM 1800
providers there, or your phone won't work without a prepaid SIM, which once
again would need to be from a GSM 1800 provider.

The 1800 networks[1] in the UK are Orange and T-Mobile. Coverage for Orange
is quoted as 99% of the population - see

[1] O2 and Vodafone have _some_ 1800MHz microcells to provide additional
capacity where their 900MHz capacity is stretched. I wouldn't want to bet on
there being too many of them.
