My T610 has no obvious wire mesh/grille arrangement, there is a
rectangular aperture and the grille (such as I can see with a jeweller's
loupe) is about 5-7mm back from the front of the phone.

I don't think yours is broken by your description.

It appears a bit back like yours and to the right and up (I can see an
obvious metallic edge), I'd estimate around 7mm yes... I spent today looking
at display models and saw a grille stuck directly behind the apperture and
thought there must be an obvious fault there with mine. It seems to be no1
target for dust and object entry. The phone is currently functionally
perfect...

Perhaps this was the cure for the hissing phones?

Anyone got one with a grille right at the front or am I picking at nothing?

What grille? Mine has a little slot, which appears to have some fluff
in it. No grille visible at all.

Nope you're picking at nothing. It does collect dust though, even in a case,
so the best method is to keep a can of air duster spray handy.
