T68i Battery

Looking at the T68i battery, there is a negative and positive copper
strip and then a small square strip of copper (presumably) between
them.

Anyone tell me what that is for?

It's for status information (i.e. whether it is a genuine SE battery for
optimised charging and also for your battery meter readout)
