I'm wondering whether it is possible to write applications for the P800 using
free development tools? I'd like to tackle a couple of programs.

In particular I want to log the current cell ID number & name with a time-tag
so I can throw it into my GPS logging software & see which cells are where.
There is a program called miniGPS that I downloaded that does almost the same
thing, but doesn't log the data, and only shows cell number, not name.

What a waste of time :-) If GPRS works it works surely, you don't need to
know some random number assigned to it by some random person do you?!

GPRS? I'm 99.9% sure I didn't mention GPRS, and certainly my request has
nothing to do with GPRS. We don't all live in the world of GPRS.

As for the random numbers, they may well be random, but they are fixed. There
is also a cell ID name transmitted.

Random person? I don't really care about that.

Any comments from anyone that would like to tackle the question rather than
    these non-sequiturs?

Yes, in principle it's possible. The P800 is a Symbian phone,
so you can program it in Symbian C++, OPL, Java, etc.

Currently Java doesn't give you that kind of low-level access
to the phone. Symbian C++ is probably the best bet.

I'm not sure the API you need are exposed by you can give it a try.
    The development kit is free.

    Have a look at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/develop/
    and http://www.newlc.com to get started.

    Good luck!

I misread the post sorry.... Still isn't the idea of GPS to locate where you
are on a graphical interface which displays a map....

Thanks - some good links there - I've had a bit of a look & can't find any
free tools but I haven't exhausted all the links yet.
