It should be free without any fault. These places get cash from SonyEricsson
so for them to refuse to do it for you is complete ignorance on their part.
One problem is the pictures are over inflated...

Tell 'em your phone keeps freezing, the wap is painfully slow, and sometimes
it locks up so bad you have to take the battery out to get it to clear.
When I had mine upgraded, the lady on the phone at the upgrade centre said,
"In order to upgrade we need to know what problems you are having with the
handset. For example - I imagine it locks up, does it ?"
I said, "Oh yes, now and again, very annoying."
And she said, "The wap is slow also, is that right ?"
And I grinned and said, "You are correct indeed."
She said, "Ok - I'll pop those issues on the form and we'll see you tomorrow
then."
And I told her thankyou very much, and the next day the company upgraded it
for me. I didn't even need to invent these problems (though I would if I had
to, that is what they expect to hear when you call up, afterall - they know
the score - if they ask you what your problems are, half the time they know
you're making them up ;-) ), as she fed me the lines anyway. A nice woman
indeed (place in Brighton, btw.)
It seems that most places who upgrade know you just want the latest firmware
for the added features it gives you (in the case of the T610, added options
in the sms menu, sharper camera pictures, faster java - that sort of thing)
but they need to give SE a reason to do it, even if they do get dosh from
them for doing it (that's probably why, I suppose). Tell 'em you have the
above faults and you should be fine. Even if you're a bad liar they're not
going to refuse you ! And it's only a white lie, so ... ;-)
However, the company that upgraded my t68m to i didn't ask why I wanted it
done at all, they just did it.

If SonyEricsson offered me money to upgrade phones I'd just do it without
question. If I was a lazy bas***d working in Carphone Warehouse I'd probably
say why, what's wrong with it?

I couldn't say - I've never taken my phones to the whorehouse to be
upgraded. But from what I've heard, eight out of ten times they couldn't
find their arse in a floodlit room with a map and a flashlight, so - par for
the course, really.
However, I can say that my ex husband has just upgraded his t-mobly Samsung
T100 to an SE P800 (for forty notes) thru CPW and the sales woman was pretty
competent - she gave t-mobile the what-for when they kept her on hold for
ages, for sure. And she even recommended a few places to download apps for
it. So they're not all bad.
