Re: how do i use my v551 as a modem on my laptop
You can use whatever provider you want. You do need a data plan to do that.

Yep, you need that but nothing else. Connecting to your own ISP
through the phone just counts minutes, not bytes.

You can connect to your own ISP without a data plan. You have to have
CSD ($3.99/month) then just put a + in front of the phone number you
dial to turn on data mode.
I am using it from my laptop and my palm without any problems.
I too didn't want to pay for a data plan but CSD is necessary.

How else do you expect them to pay for the equipment that makes it possible?

What you actually get for $3.99/mo is a data plan called "Wireless Internet".

That's Cingular WAP, plus you also get CSD (Cingular ISP or your own ISP) at
no additional charge. You don't have to actually use the WAP, but that's the
feature you're paying for. CSD is just serendipity.

Re: how do i use my v551 as a modem on my laptop
Equipment? I don't remember calling my LAN carrier and asking them to
charge me to make a different type of phone call. Or do you mean the
equipment they bought to block me from making the call?

The equipment needed for CSD.

It's not a different type of phone call.
A GSM phone has no real dialup modem, just a sort of virtual modem which
makes a connection to a carrier's IWU (Inter Working Unit), located in some
service center. The IWU has the actual modem that can make analog data calls
and/or fax calls over the PSTN (public switched telephone network). If the
carrier doesn't provide an IWU, or if your account isn't provisioned for CSD
(Circuit Switched Data), then a GSM phone cannot data and/or fax calls. If
your account is provisioned for CSD, then all you need is to install the phone
as a modem with Windows Dial-Up Networking.
>Or do you mean the
>equipment they bought to block me from making the call?
There is no such equipment.
