Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used, as well as
constantly crashing and I have to reboot every time I try to use it and
it doesn't recognize SIM Contacts. Can anyone suggest an alternative
that works please? Ideally one with a sensible Window Interface instead
of an ugly and pointless phone image interface. All I want to do is
download my SIM contacts into a .csv or text file. I could backup my
contacts onto a harware sim car reader but surely someone has written a
sensible program to do this. File transfer of images etc is an option
bonus. Many Thanks, William

I've had very little success with MPT, whether v3 or v4, and my phone is a
Motorola V220.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
I have the latest Motorola K1 KRZR and it comes with Motorola Phone
Tools and a USB cable. But the software only allows transfer of the
numbers in the phones memory, not the numbers in the SIM memory.
Anyway, that's if you can get it to work at all! The program constantly
crashes and the interface is the worst I have even seen. You remember
in the old days Motorola phones were for losers, until they invented
the V3 they were last place in the market. Well their software team
didn't change, this is the worst stuff I have ever seen and I see
dozens of posts by users who also think MPT sucks.
On CNET I saw a review of Mobile Action's Handset Manager which unlike
MPT looks like it works. Unfortunately, it runs only with their own USB
cable, not the one supplied by Motorola. I would ideally like a program
I can download over the net and use with my existing cable.
*********************************************************************
Can anyone out there answer my question--- Any software recommendations
please to use instead of Motorola phone Tools?

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
I tried MobileEdit but it didn't support copy of SIM numbers to the
computer, only phone memory number synchronizing with Outlook. It also
looks like someone's high school project.
Next I found DataPilot. It doesn't mention copying SIM number to the
computer, only outlook synchronizing. It also has not demo version
available and no good screenshots, and I am not prepared to spend $35
without more information.
Meantime I will go to the shops and see if I can find "Mobile Action
Handset Manager 9.0 USB Data Suite" which was given a reasonable review
by CNET at this link:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Mobile_Actio...9.html?tag=txt
At least they described it as "functional" which is much more than most
would say about the dreadful Motorola Phone Tools.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
you can have mpt copy the numbers from the sim card by changing a setting
in ---mobile phone - options - phone book selection.
my mpt is 4.36
also, my mpt never crashes so i would speculate that your computer as a
whole is not behaving well.
mpt is not a motorola product rather it is created by avanquest
you should learn how to use the program and verify that your computer is ok
before you beat it up so bad.

I think Mobile Phone Tools is a program that is difficult to get set up,
and it isn't very flexible if you change USB ports. It needs to rediscover
the phone if it moves.
Other than that, it works fine with USB or Bluetooth for me.
It has never caused a hang or crash, I don't have to reboot.
I use it with a Motorola v551 and a v220.
It allows you to select whether you want to create new entries in the phone
or on a SIM card, and can copy both. I don't think you make any selection
when reading the contacts, so you have something wrong in your setup, in
addition to your crashes and hangs.
It does have an option to synchronize to Outlook or a free-standing
MSAccess-compatible database. It also has an option to just back up or
restore the contacts and calendar to csv files.
Have you run the update process o make sure you have the latest version?
Is this a legitimate copy? I've read that some illegitimate copies have
defects, although I'm not sure why that would be true.

MPT 4 works for me with a V3, V3i (2 off) and Nokia 6310i and if you want
uninspiring moments then you should try using the Nokia software. That's
one of many reasons why I use MPT for it above Nokia's own. The reviews of
Handset Manager don't appear too impressive but please, spend around 50
bucks and let us know you made the right choice.
I save and use all my 'phone numbers and contact details in 'phone memory,
SIMs can't hold enough useful information.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
Clarence
i updated the software on the k1 phone and mpt had to redetect it and
couldn't find it.
fortunately the k1 is one of the listed phones in 4.36 when i did a manual
search to set up the phone.
other than that i agree with your comments about the useability of mpt.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
I tried again and MPT sees no numbers on my SIM card. Are you 100% sure
it can read the SIM card numbers? If so what is the setting to allow
this? (Note I have GSM phone with SIM memory, not a CDMA phone with no
SIM).
Also to all those nutters saying Motorola Phone Tools works OK... Here
is a selection of quotes from posts on this user group....
**********************************
I did get my bluetooth working...tt works great. I would however like
to use
Motorola phone tools since I did purchase the dang program. I at once
had it
working for like a day about a month ago. Don't know what changed but I
was on
with tech support for like ever and they could not even get the
bluetooth to work.
**********************************

REPLY: It's not worth the money, unless they charge 10p for it, and
that's debatable
**********************************
I find the MPT package incredibly temperamental to the point of being
useless.
**********************************
recently got a brand new v300 phone. I also recently bought Phone
Tools. Once I got it installed, it worked fine...for about half
an hour. The next day, nothing. I've reinstalled countless times, on
two separate machines (and yes, I installed everything before
connecting the cable).
**********************************
All it takes for me to crash (freeze) the software for me is to close
one of the windows. And it has so many process running I then have to
reboot as I can't find and kill them all in Task Manager.
And then lets look at it's interface... It's dreadful. Why don't
Motorola pay Microsoft to write them some software? Or get the WinZip
team.. I think they asked the worst developer on the Lotus Notes team,
told him to make it as complicated and ugly as possible and then only
gave him one day to write it...
All we actually need is a button for backup and restore. The backup
copies all the files on the phone onto the c drive (turning contacts
into .csv, .txt or .vcf). The restore does the opposie. Thats about all
we need!!!! Instead these tossers have written the worlds worst and
most crash prone junk. Depressing.

Well, I'm one of those "nutters" who has no problem using MPT. Works
like a champ via cable or BT although I usually use BT. I have the
latest version and no problems with my v3i.

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
Oh I looked up avantquest and got this review from amazon:
- The software included with the phone "Motorola Phone Tools" from
AvantQuest is a baby's joke e.g. in the middle of the synchronization
it would continuously ask you to delete all of your Outlook contacts
with no setting anywhere stating to delete anything. It would hang
eventually until you restart your computer times enough as to feel like
throwing phone and computer over the window. The software is in general
very complicated, it would ask you for every contact, one by one to
repeat the same action again and again, so be ready to be very very
very patient with it.
Please, please, can someone just suggest a progam I can download with a
demo / trial version that I can install and use with the USB cable that
my phone came with instead of beating my head against the wall with the
buggy crappy Motorola Phone tools???

Re: Motorola Phone Tools is the worse software I have ever used
If I remember correctly, with my v551 and MPT, if the entry is number 15,
it's on the phone; if it's 1015, it's on the sim.

I just pulled up the "phonebook". Numbers stored in the phone are numbered
from 1-999, numbers from 1000-1999 are in the SIM. They both show up with
no manual effort or selection. Under "Mobile phone", options, there is an
option to add new entries in the phone or the SIM. I have phone selected,
but that doesn't affect the display.

I never said it works okay. It is an abominable piece of crap.
But it does work. The whining posts offer no assistance.

I don't think I have ever had a crash or hang.

I think it is "cute". Making it look like the selected phone, and offering
"skins", is a waste of programming time. They should have hired a native
English speaker instead.

In keeping with the "phone" interface, many things are found by pressing
the "menu" button on the phone image.
Menu-organizer-Mobile_Phone-Backup/Restore brings up the same screen as
"synchronization from the main (outboard) screen.
Backup/Restore, Backup saves the calendar and phonebooks to csv files
