For the record, the Motorola P280 (T280) DOES have an external antenna
port. Just remove the gray rubber plug and you'll see the tiny port.

I get a fringe signal in my office as I'm just between 2 towers and
the cellphone drops calls. The signal from the closer tower has to
come 'through' the building, however there's another tower further
away, but in-line with my office window.

I was told by one vendor that Motorola never made an adapter and that
the OEMs wouldn't bother. Finally after a year of having this phone
and poor reception in my office (everywhere else is great) I found the
correct antenna adapter/patch cable on-line, that terminates in a TNC
female connector, leaving you free to choose an antenna. I bought a
YAGI directional antenna hooked it up to the patch cable, pointed it
at the closest tower and boom I have a great signal and clear calls.
To prove it I can unscrew the internal antenna and still get great
calls, but if I unplug the external cable I get nothing. I tried an
external omni-directional antenna, which helped, but still wasn't as
good as the YAGI in this situation.

The advantage of the YAGI antenna is that it's directional and stops
the handset 'hunting' between towers.

I hope this clarifies other posts that says the phone doesn't have and
external antenna port... IT DOES

PS. Using a headset is a good idea to:
a) keep your thick head from blocking the signal when on the internal
antenna
b) keep you from pulling the friction fitting antenna adapater out
during a call
c) keep radio signals out of my brain... I've only got one

PS. It was worth the effort because I like my provider, my service
plan and the service I get everywhere but my office desk.
