The funny part about their PTT is that i went into a Verizon Store and
asked them to demo the PTT function with two of their phones, they were
un able to do this for some reason the phones would not connect to one
another. Also many people report delays of 30-40 seconds with the PTT
function for verizon. ALso how come in the comercieal during the can
you hear me now thing no one replies? Just wondering Nextel has a 1
second delay and i have never had any issues. Seems to me that you go
with some one that had been doing it for a while and had worked all the
    kinks out.

I went into an Nextel store and tried using one of their phones. No
    signal. It happens.

    >Also many people report delays of 30-40 seconds with the PTT

"Many" people? Who? First I've heard of this. A few second delay
yes, but almost a minute? Come on..my leg is feeling a little
stretched from all the pulling you're doing.

    > ALso how come in the comercieal during the can

....hey..it's a *commercial*. People fly in commercials too. Get a
    clue...*it's not real*. DUH.

....On this I agree. Unless Verizon can prove to me that their PTT
technology is equal or superior to Nextels, then I'll probably stick
with Nextel. However, I ENCOURGE all the other cell phone companies
to develop better and better PTT technology. It'll help keep Nextel
competitive and drive prices, (especially PTT phones), down.

One pet peeve I've got is that with the myriad of phone features, why
can't they make a cost effective phone that:

    1. Has all the modern features of most phones.
    2. Has an excellent battery life.
    3. Has a built in camera.
    4. Is small.
    5. Is in color.
    6. Has a GPS
    7. *and* has PTT capability?

Seems to me that the phones I've seen have some of the features above
    but not all of them.

This isn't the first I've heard of it. I don't know how many places you
read up on, but it's all over the internet.. HowardForums, etc. 30-40
seconds to make the initial connection seems to be the norm for alot of
people, while 8-10 seconds seems to be the norm for others. Obviously
Verizon has a bunch of critters to work out of their system.

It's just one of those things.. you know, how you can tell the person on the
other side is saying "yes"... especially since the VZW guys next words are
    "good".

I'll say this, despite the "delay" that is sooo heavily discussed here,
the sound quality and dependability will outweigh these shortages.
NEXTEL has been in the Direct Connect buisness for ohhh 10 years now
correct? Verizon has been in the PTT business ohhh 14 days now? NEXTEL
signal quality and dependability is awful. The garbled sound of a Direct
Connect call and the frequently dropped cell phone calls made me switch.
I have had the Verizon PTT for about 2 weeks, and I am more than
pleased. Yes, they have some minor problems, but if you want to start a
list, I bet my NEXTEL Problem list will be much longer. I have been
calling customer service for Verizon due to a phone issue, and I even
was able to talk to them on Sunday of a holiday weekend. Yes, I will pay
a little more for Verizon, but knowing my money spent is going to a
dependable network, will put me at ease. NEXTEL has it's place for now.
Verizon PTT will bulldoze away their business in a couple of years when
all these "contracts" are up. I can wait an extra couple of seconds to
contact my other user knowing that my signal will get through. Everyone
on this board that has one of these things knows the frustration of
pressing the button, and waiting, and waiting and then the long
beeeeppppppp... not available C0" . Let's all admit it, their is a bit
of jealously against Verizon because they have something that's better
than you have. So, take your batt and ball and go home...ask mommy to
buy you a Verizon when your "sentence" is up and you are relesed from
custody of your NEXTEL Contract !!!!!!

Nextel works for me too. They do have times when the PTT quality is ****.
Then they have times when I'm talking to someone 800 or 3000 miles away, and
I'd swear they were in the same room.

I mostly attribute the drop in service quality of late to overpopulation
    here in Tampa.

    Re: Verizon PTT

Ok- we will all admit to one thing- Verizon has only been in the PTT
business commercially for two weeks. Are you expecting me to believe
that they bought and implemented the technology unseen, or were unable
to uncover the very obvious problems that have occured since rollout?
Or that they didn't have enough information available to them to train
their salespeople properly on the biggest technological advance the
COmpany has made in a lifetime? So what does this say about their R&D
people, let alone the gods at Corporate? They rushed a product to
market, that according to mutiple posts on this NG, other NG's and
elswhere around the Net, DOES NOT WORK (or works poorly when it does),
that there salespoeple are not trained to demo, and after the 'free
trial perios' is over, will be more expensive than Nextel. Why would
they do this- TO MAKE MONEY. If they gave two craps about their
customers, they could have easily delayed rollout for a few months and
deliverd a reliable, stable and usable product (if they are such a great
Company, they shouldn't have to worry about churn if someone else comes
out with the same thing in the mean time). Instead, they have fallen
prey to the "Microsoft Syndrome- put out a product (no matter how
crappy) and they will buy it because of our name. We'll get around to
fixing it later, when the problems affect what's left of our
credibility." And the fact that their crack R&D people apparently
signed off on this rollout, and certainly the Corporate Gods signing off
on this rollout, just proves that they are concerned about nothing other
than putting more dollars in the coffers (to hell with quality).

And I'm glad to hear that you are ok with waiting to make a connection
because THE LATENCY ISSUE WILL NEVER GO AWAY. It is a by-product of the
software, network and technology used in Verizon PTT. I defy anyone
here to provide any documentation from Verizon stating that the latency
will go away with time. You can't, because it does not exist. They
won't say it, because the best they can promise is a reduction in the
latency, not the elimination of it.

And we will also all agree on another point you made- Nextel has been in
the PTT busines for over 10 years. And instead of rushing products out,
they have slowly tested products, and insured that the network was
capable of supporting the product. Nationwide Direct Connect could have
been available years ago- and years ago, it would have been a crappy
product (just like Verizon PTT is now). It rolled out in stages, both
to insure functionality and make sure the network could handle it. I
realize that there a number of posts concerning problems since NWDC
rolled out- it would seem that the product is a little more popular than
expected, and call volumes are way up. Please try to tell me that this
is the reason for the Verizon problems- I need a really good chuckle.

And before I hear the line about Nextel needing to do something big to
counter this marvel of Verizon technology, maybe their agreement over a
year ago with Qualcomm for the exclusive U.S. rights to their CDMA PTT
technology will dull the roar. Did I say over a year ago? Wow- that
would be well in advance of Verizon rolling out their Push To Wait
product. And did I say CDMA technology? That would mean that the day
might come when I don't have to listen to the false sense of security
people get when they bash the iDen network (What will you ***** about
    then?).

The bottom line- bigger is not always better. I'll offer Microsoft up
as the example again. Lukewarm, unreliable, buggy products that take
great amounts of time to maintain. Anyone notice a similarity?

Maybe it all depends on the market you're in, or the phone you have, who
knows.. but I know my DC hasn't gotten any worse since the launch of NWDC.
If anything, it's gotten better, but I can assure you it has not gotten
    worse.

    Re: Verizon PTT

You forgot the part about MS releasing new products before the old products
are even 100% fixed... I vauguely remember hearing about a major security
flaw in Win98 that still to this day has NOT been issued a Fix (Patch or
update, nothing)...... Wish I could remember the damn site I saw it on (a
    reliable one at that)...

Voice Over IP... The Internet as a whole does not seem to be a reliable
means of transferring voice in real time... even with high powered
processors on both sides of the connection... I mean the Internet is
still involved, right? VOIP seems to have been the CDMA service
providers only option in the PTT arena... Any parallels drawn between
Microsoft and CDMA PTT seem to be well warranted.

Thanks for catching that- I had totally forgotten that aspect of the
    product marketing.

And to steal and expand upon a line I used in a post a while back,
Verizon has many of the attributes of some of our other large Corporate
neighbors. McDonalds comes to mind. They serve up a product in record
time that really isn't that good, the service is less than friendly or
helpful, and both have a clown for a spokesman that talk to fictional
friends. The only difference- in the McDonalds commercial, the
    Hamburglar talks back.
