Has anyone ever tried the packet stream gold option from Nextel? How does
it work? How fast is it? Is it worth $54.oo a month? I currently have the
$10.00 dial up plan and it is very painfully slow.

Re: Packet Stream Gold
IMO You might want to do research on this because this is basically
AIMED towards hardcore enterprise users who want connectivity
convenience. You also might want to talk to your local Nextel Store or
http://www.nextel.com for the scope of research. There *should* be a
Data Specialist at your locale that can do the demos for you.

I have been using packet stream gold service for almost a year now. I
get speeds up to about 40 kbps. This makes it equivalent to a fairly
slow dialup connect. Its fine for email, for most web surfing, and
for usenet, irc, and such. For file downloads its a bad idea unless
they are small. However for my use its been generally good and I do
want and need to availability of going online from almost anywhere,
even while cruising down the freeway at 70mph. I have been noticing
some very bad problems with nextels outbound border routers lately
however. In fact, my past 3 months have been free because they have
had at least 3 days/month when I have had been unable to get any
service outside of the nextel domain itself for over an hour at a
time. Although its nice that nextel is willing to acknowledge its
service faults by giving me the credits for service for months when
this happens, it is not an acceptable level of service. If it
continues, I will look into alternative services after the 1st of the
year. Sprint has broadband for about $80 US / month unlimited usage,
and Verison offers service only slightly slower than packet stream for
just $20/month unlimited when added to a sprint voice plan.

Re: Packet Stream Gold
Hello,
PacketStream Gold is definitely the Nextel plan that would
best suit me. It seems remarkably difficult to find out
which phones support it though.

Re: Packet Stream Gold
Any of the iden phones (with proper cable and software) should work
fine. I personally use the iM1100 modem on my laptop. I suggest you
consult the nextel website, navigate to their packet data service page
and then take the "accessories" link to get to the phone list that is
compatible with the packet data service. Also, the website contains
some substantial savings credits for hardware purchase when you
subscribe for service and buy the hardware online there. I used the
800 number to order the parts and service and told them I was calling
because I didn't want to give credit card online, They gave me the
website pricing that way.

Re: Packet Stream Gold
Not trying to bash on Nextel as I love them to death (anyone that knows me
knows this is true).. but you can get faster speeds from Tmobile for
$30/month (for unlimited use). You can use any Tmo phone with a data cable
or you can get the Tmo Sierra Air Card (for laptops) and go that route. If
you're not worried about the speed, don't want to carry two devices and/or
don't mind paying $20/more than you "could"... then sure, go for Packet
Stream Gold.
