Hi all,
I was wondering what the steps nextel takes for people who are in the
military and are notified they are to leave to a "secret" place within "x"
days. What does nextel do for this? Do they need to see orders? Can you just
call them and explain your situation? Any help appreciated..

Re: Procedure for cancellation of service?
You need to fax them a copy of your orders on official letterhead. Hope this
helps. Stay safe over there!

Re: Procedure for cancellation of service?
If you want to keep your number, you can opt for "Seasonal Standby". For the
Military, Nextel waives the 6 month limit. Here's the scoop: Seasonal
Standby is 5.95 per month (make sure to ask for restrictions, because if
anyone uses the phone while on standby the charges are huge. 75 cents/minute
for cell airtime, 20 cents/minute for long distance, 50 cents/minute for
direct connect) While on Standby, if you have any time remaining on your
contract, you will have the same amount of time left when you come off
Standby, because Standby time does not apply towards contract obligation.
If your contract term is up and/or you don't think you will continue with
Nextel, call and ask for "Account Services" or press option 1 for "English",
3 for "customer care", enter Nextel phone or account number, press 3 to
"discontinue service", you may have to wait for some time as this department
sometimes has a long hold time. Once you get to Account services explain
your situation to them, because they are the only department that can waive
the early termination fee if you are going to have one. If they say they
will waive the fee, ask for the "ticket/confirmation number" for the
cancellation request. This way if for some reason you do get the fee,
customer care can credit it off the account. They cannot do so if there is
no documentation saying the fee is waived, so make sure the Account Services
agent gives you that number and write it down someplace safe (like maybe on
the most recent bill when you called in)

Re: Procedure for cancellation of service?
Just call them and tell them whats going on. They will ask for a copy of
your orders and thats all. You don't need to pay 5.95 a month or anything.
Your accnt is placed on hold is all. THey don't charge you anything...
TRUST ME , I know
