Some of the phone shops claim to have it in "soon", while a wanky salesman
at phones4u said it won't be out for 3-6 months, despite the fact that they
are advertising it as one of their best selling phones!

I am in the same boat, due an upgrade soon on O2 Online, but will be waiting
for the 6230i at a reasonable price.

I've had the phone now for 3 weeks, but I guess that does not help you ,
    since I'm living in Denmark.

It's a nice phone, but has some small errors, like turning off when changing
from Silent to Normal mode. But this is probably one of those software
update things, that hopefully will be corrected!?

phones4u claimed to have them in stock yesterday. Asked how much it would be
on an upgrade. Half an hour later having had them try to sell me different
tariffs on the same network, different networks, a new contract on the same
network they decided that actually it'd be free. By which time a) it was too
late to nip home and get suitable id b) I'd decided that if they were this
much hassle to deal with I'd rather do business with someone else.

They seem to be widely available sim free prices I've seen for people with
visible stock ranged from 275 to 240.
