Help Please: Nokia 6670 vs RS-MMC

Ok here is the problem:

my 6670 recently got low on memory and when i received an sms, my phone all
of a sudden would not let me go into the message. I could see it in my list
and highlight it, but every time i selected it, nothing happened.

I turned my phone off and back on, then I found I could get into the menu
but i could not get into any application my phone had, not even the phone
directory.

I took the phone to nokia, who said it was a software problem and reset the
phone for me.

I walked off and my phone worked again to make calls and receive messages,
but i discovered i still had a problem where i couldnt get into
applications.

I had a brainwave and took out my RS-MMC .. bingo! everything in my phone
worked again except the sound recorder.

I want to reformat this MMC but before I do I want to get the data off it..
i put it back in my phone and connected it via cable to my laptop... when i
went to access the MMC, the computer just waited for ages and did not load
any window with its contents up.

I tried a few times and it failed.

I now put the MMC into my laptop's card reader and it detects the card.. I
go into the card and it has one file there called @[]S[][] . Where I have
put [], it is a square box which i think accounts for an unprintable
character.

I presume this file is a virtual file that in itself is what my mobile phone
uses and perceives as a formated drive. Am i wrong in this perception? If
so, where are all my saved files then?

If i am right in my perception, how can i crack open this file and get to
the contents through my laptop? I tried to copy the file to my hard drive
but an error occurs.

Is there a known bug with this phone when the card gets too full?

My last nokia suffered memory problems and i lost data twice, i don't want
this to be a third time .. i will lose all faith in nokia if i've bought
another faulty product.

I did backup the phone at some point but i do not think it backed up my
card, well not the sound or notes files which i am after.

Aside from getting to my data, anybody know if i reformat will i get the
software back that let me read microsoft word and excel docs? How do I get
the sound recorder to work again too?

Is anybody able to assist? it will be very greatly appreciated.

Get a SD card reader for your PC and format the card from there. I got one
for mine to make it easier to load up podcasts for listening on my 6630.

Thanks for your help but I didn't ask about the formatting side, rather the
data retrieval mostly/accessing the info through my laptop as it appears the
phone stores evertying as part of one conglomerated file on the media.

Define 'everything'. I find my 6630 stores quite a bit as individual files.
Especially when it comes to pictures, movies and sound.

If you're running up against a problem with the *phone* not being able to
use the card properly because it's full then my suggestion remains. Pull
the card, put it in a PC, remove "something" from it to free up space (if
that's indeed the issue) and then put it back in the phone. There are a ton
of directories the phones use to manage all manner of things on the card.
Applications are also stored as individual files.

If you've got something on there that's causing the phone to act up then
using a card reader attached to a PC might be the only way to correct it.

card... so what i did was to add the attachment to the card and put it into
my memory card slot on my laptop.. the laptop recognises i have a card in it
and i can double click on it in my compuer and get a window up.

This window does not display files but rather one file which is 252,544 kb
in size - this file has the name @[]S[][] where each [] is actually a
rectangle, which i interpret to be a character which is unprintable.

I cannot get into this file. I presume it is a file in which all data was
saved from my phone. Is there software that will read this file from my pc?

Ah, that's not how the 6630 handles the cards. I'm surprised. Do you have
the original 64mb (or was it 32mb?) card that came with the phone? I'd
wonder if all cards the 6670 handles are going to be setup using a single
file or if yours is damaged. Or possible that the PC interface is
mis-reading the card (unlikely, but possible).

One thought, trying copying that file off the card onto the PC. Verifying
that it can actually be read and that it turns out to be the size indicated.
It's remotely possible that the directory has gotten corrupted and that the
file would end up being unreadable. You might also be able to use an editor
on the PC to at least look into the data to manually extract important text.

When I put the RS-DV MMC from my 6680 into my card reader it had several
files of similar names to above.

It also reported some files were 2gb+, not bad for a 64mb card.

I replaced the card with a new 256mb one (which has completely different
gold contacts) and it works fine.

My last card would not uninstall or install new software despite having
space.

I'd try a new card and copy files over manually.
