Name/number display within text messages on nokia 6021

I have just replaced my old Sony/Ericsson T200 with a new Nokia 6021
(Series 40 user interface) and although the Nokia is much more powerful,
there's one feature I miss on the Nokia, or at least I haven't figured
it out yet.

My service provider (Vodafone NL) sends me voice mail notification SMS
text messages in which they put the phone number of the caller. My old
phone would replace this number with the contact name if the number
belonged to a known contact. My new Nokia doesn't do this and moreover,
I haven't figured out how to find out the contact name from the number.
Through the "Use detail -> Number" options I can 'use' the number for
all sorts of things, but nowhere I found an option to view saved
contacts with this number.

Can anyone give me some hints on this, or is it just impossible with
this phone?

I understand that you receive an SMS as if it was sent from your own phone?
I assume you get the contact name displayed for other SMS messages?

For sure a S40 phone should show the name from your contacts but there are a
couple of conditions: this number should not appear twice in the phonebook.
Secondly current Nokia models normally only use 7 lowest digits from the
phone number, if you have two numbers which are different (e.g. one number
in national and international presentation) but have the same 7 lowest
digits, the phone would not show the name from the phonebook.

If you check carefully your phonebook content, I believe you should be able
to solve the problem (I think both SIM and the phone memory should have
distinct numbers, for the 7 lowest digits, if both memories are in use).

Have you tried sending an SMS to yourself? Does the phone then only show
your number (I assume you have your name and number in your phonebook). Or
was your problem something totally different?

Yep, I do.

This is an interesting point. I found out that the number I was testing
from did appear twice in my phone book. I have fixed that now, and when
I call my mobile from that phone, the contact name now appears correctly.

The fact that a number can only appear once in the phone book (for the
phone to make a number-contact connection) is a disappointment for me
though. For different persons having different mobile numbers, but
sharing the same land line, I now have to create a separate entry for
that land line.

I guess so... Whenever my old phone (Sony-Ericsson T200) saw a "number"
inside a message it would check the phone book for matches, and replace
the number (inside the message) with the contact name. My new Nokia now
does tag the number as being a number, but won't show to whom it
belongs, although it does provide several operations to perform on it
(e.g. call the number, send it a message, add to contact, etc.)

Any idea whether what I want is possible with this phone?

But what else could one expect, if two persons share a land line, how could
the phone show the correct person's name when one of the two calls from the
land line.
I'm not sure but I assume it would not make a differece for caller's name
presentation if either of the two called from their mobile number, even if
you had the same land line in you phonebook for both entries? At least I
don't see why the phone should not display the name correctly in this case.

I think I understand now what you're after. I'm not familiar with this phone
model but I don't think the phone would be able to change a phone number,
from the message content, to a name from the phonebook. A matter of taste if
this feature is good or not. Personally I don't see many cases where a
number from my phonebook would appear in a message from somebody else (the
sender's number anyway gets converted to the name from the phonebook.
Anyway, especially if you could turn this feature on and off according to
your preference, it could be OK.

Of course it will never show the 'correct' name, as there is no such
thing. But the first match, possibly with an indication that there are
more matching contacts, or even all matching contacts would be nice... :-)

The phone book provides for more than one number per contact (home,
office, mobile, etc.) and displays the name of the contact and the type
of the number that is calling, which is very nice.

Suppose that I have a John and Jane Smith in my phone book. They share
the same land line but have their own mobile. Now I would have to create
a contact like "Smith family" to store their land line because I cannot
connect it to both the John and Jane contact. In this case it is not
that problematic, but now suppose that the two people who share a land
line are not related (students for instance). Firstly I would have to
make an artificial contact name that doesn't make very much sense
anymore, but more importantly, whenever I want to connect an already
existing land line to someone I would have to disconnect it from the
other person first, and I would have to know that that number already
existed in my phone book.

Do you see my problem with this?

Well, in my case Vodafone (NL) sends me text messages whenever someone
calls me while my phone is switched off. The message is "From Vodafone
Voicemail" and the message body tells me either that the caller has left
a voice mail message, or that is has not.

What surprises me is that the phone does 'see' the number as such, and
provides operations for it (e.g. to call that number), but apparently it
doesn't provide the possibility to convert the number into a contact
name so that when I choose to call back the person, I know in advance
who it is...

Hmm, I just found a (very nasty) workaround. If I choose to call the
number and cancel it immediately (before any connection is established)
I can find the contact name in the dialed numbers list.
