Ok, I've had service so far for a little under a week, and in the city, it's
working out pretty good. I'm getting ready to take a little road trip here,
but am still unclear on something.
I've heard that SPCS has a Free & Clear America plan, which allows either a
certain number of minutes for 'off-network' roaming (if you're in an
affiliate market), or for 50% use if you're in a corporate market. The corp
one costs $5.00 and the other $10.00 (at least as it lists in my area).
I contacted Customer Service, via email, just to confirm all of this, and
they are telling me that the area I am in does in fact qualify for the 50%
usage offering..
--- response from them below
"Regarding the 50 percent roaming, we have recently launched Free and Clear
America plan. The details of these plan are mentioned below:
- All Minutes include Long Distance.
- Customers on this plan may ignore the roaming charges indicator on their
handsets.
- At least 50% of the customers usage must be on the Sprint network.
- Some feature such as Vision, Caller ID, Roadside Rescue, Call
Waiting,Voice Command, 3-way Calling, International Calling, and PCS to PCS
minutes buckets will not work while roaming.
It is available in your service area.
Thank you for contacting Sprint.

---
Do I interpret that as them telling me that I can in fact get the package
that allows for 50% of usage off network (which I certainly won't use
anywhere near). The main thing is, I don't want to pay $10.00 more if I'm
only going to be going out of town *rarely* (and yes I realize a call
lasting 3-5 minutes w/ roaming and ld charges, are easily going to add up to
that 10.00 fee quickly).
So basically, I'm just wondering if anyone knows for SURE (since this email
contradicts what the website says), can I or can't I get the 50% roaming
option. I am located in El Paso, TX, zipcode 79924.
Thanks.

Re: Free & Clear America -- Confused
According to the email response you are in fact in a corp. market and
therefore you are eligable for the F&CA plan. I use it too when I travel
outside of the Wash/Balt. area. It works good. I get unlimited roaming if
necessary at no additional charge. LD included. The key is to simply make
sure that your total minutes roaming for the month do not go over 50% of the
total minutes used. For the $5/mo. it is a great deal and it's nice to not
have to worry about the "roaming" indicator on the phone when in remotes
areas of the country.
Hope this helps.

If the email came from SPCS, then you are qualified to get it. If you don't
want to get it now for $10/mo., don't. See how you do with your road trip
and whether you need it or not ... If you find that you are roaming more
than a bit, then call them up and add it ...

But whether it shows up on your bill like that is another question. CSRs
do make mistakes, as even Sirii posted.

Thanks. I still can't get a solid response from Sprint regarding this. I
called CS and the man I spoke to told me that he wasn't sure, and to email
CS again with the original message attached. Nothing back in regards to that
yet -- as I said, paying five bucks and being able to use 50% of my airtime
when roaming (which is something I've already noticed my phone doing IN the
city -- is that normal, to roam in your OWN city?), versus paying $10.00 for
100 minutes that I may or may not use any of..

This used to be very common in the Chicago metropolitan area; and it still
happens in some locales, and within some buildings. I pay the $5/mo not to
have to worry about it.

Re: Free & Clear America -- Confused
With SprintPCS, "roaming" means that your phone can't find a Sprint PCS
signal and you have set it (on "Automatic" or "Analog") to be able to
use some other provider's compatible signal, and it has found one. It
makes no difference where you are - in your own house or 1000 miles
away. With Sprint PCS, there's little concept of a "home" area, and
roaming has no geographic boundaries. Your phone is either using the
SPCS network, or 'searching for service', or using some other provider's
network. If you set the phone to "Sprint PCS only", that last choice
will never happen.
If your plan is F&CA and so includes roaming, then any calls made on
another network just use your included minutes. If your plan has no
such option, then the calls cost $.

Bad news, man. I went and looked. El Paso, TX is covered by one of
our affilitates, Alamosa PCS. Alamosa does not fully participate in
our Free&Clear America program. There is a $10/month option that
gives you 100 roaming minutes, and Long Distance is included in that.
But the up-to-50% option is not available in your market.
I hate to bring bad news, but that's the absolute truth.

Re: Free & Clear America -- Confused
Company Profile----
ALAMOSA HOLDINGS, INC. IS THE LARGEST PCS AFFILIATE OF SPRINT based on
number of subscribers. Alamosa has the exclusive right to provide digital
wireless mobile communications network services under the Sprint brand name
throughout its designated territory located in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma,
Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Washington, Oregon,
Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois and California. Alamosa's territory includes
licensed population of 15.8 million residents.

That surely sucks.. they're the largest affiliate and don't offer it - oh

This seems to make sense. El Paso, TX is NOT a corporate market. It
*IS* an affiliate market run by Alamosa PCS (I know, I first got my
Sprint service there... and actually, I'm heading back down there to
spend Christmas).
I looks like Sprint negotiated a $10 for the F&CA plan, so you're set.
Of course the only way to know for sure is to add it and see what
happens. If the rep can add F&CA to your account, then you're set... if
not, well, now you know the answer.
I remember El Paso as being a very well covered market though, even on
the far east side where the city is expanding. Really the only places
that didn't have coverage were beyond Horizon City in the East, beyond
Las Cruces in the North, or to Mexico in the south. And if you plan on
roaming in Mexico, I have a feeling F&CA won't cover the fees involved.

Just curious: but whereabouts in El Paso are you roaming off Sprint?
When i was there, they seemed to have blanketed the town pretty well.
