Is anyone else having quirky laptop connection problems with sanyo
5400--my old 4900 had problems but was more dependable than new
5400--any suggestions--I have tried new sprint downloads, and the
drivr download, modem setup--both equally frustrating.

It would be nice if you explained what problem you are having ...

Have used a 4900 with sprint's software on a 1.6g tosiba lap for about
a year-and the connection was typical of what is discribed, trasfer
rate, required some disconnect/reconnects cycles, but it would be
fairly dependable to connect with.
Hooked up the new 5400 to the same system, nothing. all types of
nothing. I had read they new ones wouldn't work with the cable. Then
I would get occassional connection bursts of maybe 10, 15, 20 seconds,
then no transfer.
I had never used the modem driver connection stuff, downloaded these
drivers from future dial, no initial improvement, kept reloading the
drivers, or re-installing them, had about given up, then suddenly
connect via the modem setup, virtually no disconnect problems, and
appeared the best connection rates ever. Worked for hours on and off
till I turned everything off. Next day tried to use again, either the
modem not recoginzed message, or line busy.
Downloaded the new sprint software, got occassional connection
bursts--but very frustrating--lately,if I tried to used a previously
established connection may/or may not work, sometimes barely, other
times very good--sometimes seems like have to establish another modem
connection--it's not predicatable. Love the 5400 phone, as the built
in vision stuff is much faster than the 4900, pages load much, much
faster--
Also, if I could not get the 5400 connection to work, I could plug the
4900 back in and the phone would be recognized, and would try to
establish a connection (4900 was not active, so couldn't go all the
way).
pardon my poor discription of the problem, but it's like I am using a
differenet system ever time I reboot the unit---never the same
results--where as with the 4900 I knew the thing would work, with the
5400 sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth.
For some reason I feel like it may be a glitch with the 5400, but
everything else works great with it, and regardless of anything else,
when the usb cable is attached, the laptop makes the little connection
signal. and with the sprint software, the system check shows all is
okay, but in some cases (actually a lot of cases) when "go" is clicked
it will try to make a connection and just a few bits are indicated as
sent, then sort of freezes---then is very difficult to get a
disconnect--usually have to reboot either phone/laptop/ or both--not
sure which cures the problem.

Disable ReadyLink on the 5400 before you make any data connections with
your laptop via the cable. For whatever reason, readyLink does NOT like
it when you have a laptop connection and will repeatedly try to "hijack"
the data connection so it can register with the network.
When you're done with the laptop, you can just enable ReadyLink again.
For wahetver reason, this problem occurs on the 5400, but NOT the 5500,
which seems to know that it should cut off ReadyLink on its own during a
laptop data connection.

Thanks, but ready link was already disabled.

ASking again--has anyone noticed that either their sanyo 2500/5400 or
5500 is not as easy to use with the tethered laptop connections as say
the 4900/5300 etc/? Yesterday my connection (s) were better than
perfect, good trasfer rates, no unusualy terminations. Today;
unrecognised usb error message, would reboot either(or both) the
phone or the laptop, then may or may not recognize the "modem", then
may or may not begin the connection routine, and if it would connect,
would work maybe for 30 seconds---never a really solid
connection--feel like it's a defective handset, as if the "connect
Phone" command appears on the sprint pcs connection program, it will
always recognize a 4900, but not the 5400--since sprint does not
really offer support for this I am reluctant to go to a sprint store
and ask.

I've noticed the exact opposite. My 5500 works for this way better than
my 4900 did.

Very strange, sounds like a USB driver or OS-related problem. But as I
said, in general I now get much better performance with the 5500. I
never had your specific problems, though, with either phone.

Will respond to my own question; seems like my problem what with a
bad cable; my older cable for whatever reason must make only an
intermittant connection with my new 5400--by chance, tried another
cable and so far has worked perfectly---sometimes its the simplest
things--
The test feature on the sprint business connection indicated a good
connectiot and that all tests were okay-- also the old cable still
worked with a 4900
