Sounds like a terrific idea, doesn't it?

sounds kinda like SPCS' voice command system, eh?

But Voice Command isn't *in* your phone. That was the=20
    point I was making.

However, I was speculating. It's not based on anything=20

There is ... with Snapsync ... between my laptop, Outlook or OE and the
phone ... Something which is much more secure than what you are asking
    about.

Isn't it more likely that Sprint doesn't care to add this service for
a much more basic reason... It'll cost them more money?

Are you saying that the digital comm links between the "base" and phone
aren't secure enough to send a phone book QTA? If that's the case then they
aren't secure enough to do much more than find out what times the movie is
    playing.

I think word of this lack of security between "base" and handset needs to be
spred far and wide, if true so folks that are running sensitive sites via
handset or Vision link can rethink their positions.

Frankly, I think you and "O" are full of it on this one, and that Lawrence's
explanation is much closer to the truth. But then again, using a piece of
software locally would of course be better since Sprint has the little
problem of keeping their data systems from skidding off the edges.

I mean what other company will blow away a customer's password and then not
tell them, or admit it when called on it?

Oh, when I read your note I took it to mean a data system on SPCS
servers ---- 'cause the guy has the handset under his control, right? And
last I knew few handsets had password protection for the local phonebook.
This is the reason I'd never use "VC", for the security of it --- or lack of
it --- and the prying eyes of the SPCS employee.

    >However, I was speculating. It's not based on anything
    >concrete that I've read or been told.

Oh, so it's kinda like I called you via *2 then? <grin> Just kidding ----
I'd think I'd hit the lottery if I got you on a call ----- 'cause you at
    least seem to care.

Hey, I was talking to a large telecomm service desk the other day, speaking
with a person with an Indian accent and hearing the swoosh, swoosh, shoosh
of the loooong distance sat link. After being told total crap as an answer
to a simple question I asked the person where they were located. The answer
I got "Canada". Me, feeling a bit frisky, asked where in Canada and guess
what --- she didn't know. "Montréal?" I ask --- "No not there" she said.
Toronto?" I ask --- "No." "Vancouver?" "No, not there either". "Nova
Scotia?" "No." Then, figuring that I could name every city or town in Canada
and get the same answer I asked, "Who is the new PM of Canada?" knowing that
Canadian's are pretty sharp on things that effect them. Imagine my surprise
when she said "I don't know sir." With that out of the way I asked again
"What country are you in" and the answer I got, this time, was "India".

Wanna guess which American Company I was speaking with "O"?

To Bob Smith --- Yes I am a racist --- I buy a service from an American
company, I pay with USD and when something goes wrong I want to speak to
someone with command of English, or at least not someone who uses English as
    their second language.

Hey now! No need to get vicious!

    Thanks for the compliment, though.

    > Wanna guess which American Company I was speaking with "O"?

I honestly don't think it matters anymore. The people=20
making these choices are NOT being forced to live with=20
them. Do you think Len Lauer has to dial *2 if his device=20
starts spouting 3000 errors? Or to sit through lunch with=20
a cleanup crew rearranging tables practically on top of you=20
while another of them runs a propane-powered industrial=20
buffer, keeping a door open to sub-freezing weather so the=20
    floor dries a bit faster?

Y'know, I have such enthusiasm for the network this company=20
operates. Overall, as a nationwide voice and data service,=20
    I honest-to-God think it goes toe-to-toe with any other=20
digital service out there, and wins.

But in a bunch of tiny, and not so tiny, ways there's just=20
this utter disdain and apparent dismissal of what we hear=20
    from you, the customer.

I mean, at the beginning of December, we fundamentally=20
change the systems that provision Vision services to new=20
accounts, or to new phones, or propagate the changes=20
customers may make to Vision (username, Vision PW, etc). =20
It doesn't go right, and wait times leap into the=20
stratosphere. So does our call handle time, because we're=20
having to figure out this new system as we we use it. And=20
what do we hear from up above? Warnings that we're taking=20
too much time between calls, and leaving customers on hold=20
for too long while we work out these kinks.

Do they really think we don't feel the lovely hoof of a=20
scapegoat bearing down upon our neck?

    Sorry, I'm rambling.

    > To Bob Smith --- Yes I am a racist --- I buy a service

It's got nothing to do with racism. Several who've=20
immigrated to the USA sit next to me, and there's not a=20
sour apple in the whole lot of 'em.

It's got to do with plain and simple language barriers. It=20
is utterly incomprehensible that you would make a customer=20
work that hard to interact with your staff, and think=20
you're providing anything *close* to good service. But I'm=20
too low on the totem pole to ever get my presence=20
    considered, much less my thoughts.

That doesn't sound at all analogous to me. It's got=20
nothing to do with prosecution. It's got to do with=20
    prevention.

Assuming, of course, that I'm even close to the real=20
reasoning in the first place, and I have nothing that says=20
    I am.

No, not exactly. The T-Mobile functionality allows one to send
entries to the phone book, but not to view it. The only security flaw
is if somebody were to flood the phone book with bogus numbers. When
we had the service for my Wife, we programmed all her numbers this
way, because we could do 10 at a time. Unfortunately, the interface
is really geared towards featureless Nokias where it is simply name
and number. Most phones offered by Sprint PCS have an option to
assign multiple numbers to each name (i.e. office, home, fax, cell,
    etc.).

    It's a sincere one --- that's for sure.

    >>I honestly don't think it matters anymore.

re: Offshore Service --- No, it doesn't. Went through a goat rope with
Toshiba trying to get my machine serviced ---- actually just scheduled for
service. It's the growingest way for CA (corporate America) to save a dime
here or there. I think it was December that 4,500 jobs went offshore --- for
minor companies like Microsoft and IBM. The most interesting part is that
these companies are trying to hide this affront to their customers ----
which works, right until you have to call them.

    >The people making these choices are NOT being forced to live with them.

For now ---- when it dawns on folks that they can't get anything fixed
without learning Punjab first the tide should start changing back again. All
it'll take to start the wave for real is one company using "American Service
for your product" to slam the door shut on the practice.

    >Or to sit through lunch with a cleanup crew rearranging tables practically

    >Overall, as a nationwide voice and data service, I honest-to-God think it
    >goes toe-to-toe with any other digital service out there, and wins.

I'd agree with you, 100 percent. As I've said before there are very few
places I go where the system doesn't work. And the improvements to the
physical network over the past several years are making it even better.
Heck, drove across country several weeks ago and save for a very short time,
while traversing the rookies, the system was available whenever it was
    needed.

    >But in a bunch of tiny, and not so tiny, ways there's just this utter
    >disdain and apparent dismissal of what we hear from you, the
    >customer.

Well, if they could get the staff to hover closer to your level of
commitment than what seems the norm then these problems would go away. But
alas, getting folks to care is the hard part --- and part and parcel of
    shipping the work offshore.

    >Do they really think we don't feel the lovely hoof of a scapegoat bearing
    >down upon our neck?

Sheyit ---- but like Lauer not having to call *2 he doesn't have that hoof
on his throat, either. Yes, he's got stockholders to keep happy ---- but I'd
think a 4 hour stint answering calls in his call center would do him a world
    of good.

    I'm one of the most pro-corporate people you'll ever meet. I remember=20
when Lee Iacocca took over Chrysler near bankruptcy. I remember he=20
accepted no salary at the the start with promises of HUGE payoff if he=20
returned Chrysler back from the brink, which he got. Booyah, he earned=20
    it.

But when a CEO faces only the difference between $450 million if he wins=20
or $200 million if he loses, is there *really* any incentive to win? I=20
mean, heck, if the CEO earns a company half a billion dollars, then $450=20
million for him isn't all that bad an investment. Pay him what he's=20
worth. But that should apply on the bottom end, too. All too often, I=20
    don't think it does.
