SMS Brochures

As I posted at www.HowardForums.com yesterday, the brochures for Sprint
PCS's two-way SMS service arrived yesterday. They have a go-public date of
February 1, so until that date rolls around, all I'll say is...

....These are very attractive packages. There are discounts for Vision
customers, and a handful of messages will be thrown in for free. Sprint
PCS didn't design these packages to be highly competitive, but they're on
par with what I would reasonably expect to pay for the service.

As the pricing has not been released to the public yet, don't ask me for
that information. I will, however, answer any general questions about the
service, based on the information I've been able to gather from reputable
sources which is suitable for distribution to the general public at this
point.

Can you list which model phones support SMS, and if there are any other
models that are upgradeable to SMS. Its about time this happens, as
other Sprint employees trying to show off their inside knowledge
promised us the roll out would be in December, then they said January.
Now its February.

These handsets are 2-way SMS compatible:
Sanyo VM4500 (SCP-5500)
Samsung VI660
Sanyo RL2000
Sanyo RL2500
Nokia 3585i
Nokia 3588i

All future handsets will be 2-way SMS compatible.

No handsets can be upgraded to 2-way SMS capability. If MO-SMS wasn't in
the handset when it was released, it will not be added through a software
upgrade. Handsets that are not MO-SMS capable can continue to use Short
Mail to send messages, but will receive messages as regular SMS on the
handset.

Treo 600 is also SMS compatible, and it's working right now. The chat
function on the Treo is absolutely great (although my friends can't figure
out how I can respond so quickly). You can also use the email phone number
address ([email protected]) to chat with email users
through the Treo interface.

I was talking to *2 help tonight, and they offered the following preliminary
information. They said the pricing is subject to change based on studies
they are doing.

The go-live date is Feb 03.

If you have Vision: Unlimited msgs $5
If you don't have Vision: Unlimited msgs $10
If you don't have Vision: 100 msgs $5

The CSR also confirmed it was per phone (for the add-a-phone accounts).

Sorry, Steve. That does not match the list we've been=20
trained on. Mostly, but a couple of glaring disagreements.

The 3585i is *not* listed as 2way SMS enabled in any system=20
we use to support it. Nor are the RL2000 or RL2500. =20
You've already, and correctly, been reminded that the Treo=20
600 is enabled. The Toshiba video phone, the VM4050, it,=20
too, will be enabled. Another Audiovox/Toshiba phone is in=20
the pike, too, and will use 2wSMS.

There's word filtering down about a PocketPC device, too,=20
that will be 2wSMS enabled. But, no, folks, it doesn't=20
have a Samsung tag on it, so it's not the one you may be=20
thinking of.

BTW, wandering a bit off-topic, a few people have asked=20
about international SMS. I learned a new fact just this=20
week: The SMS clients on the phones, they support 19-
digits. We don't officially support it, but we in Tier 1=20
have also been given a list of a few countries and mobile=20
providers with whom messages *have* been exchanged. It's=20
not a large list, folks. For example, Germany isn't even=20
on it. Philippines and Australia *are* on it (I remember=20
comments about both of those recently).

We have ***no*** troubleshooting tools for international=20
SMS. We will not be able to provide tech support on it. =20
However, at least for now, it's not slated to cost anything=20
extra.

Any word on how or if Short Mail is going to fall under this pricing?

Or one-way incoming messages? (I'd hate to think they'd charge me for one
way incoming messages, half of which are viagra ads)

I remember back in the day my nokia 6185 had SMS and this was back in
April 2000. Did they stop including it for last few years?

So let me get this straight....for a feature that was supposed to be
included under Vision for what we are already paying extra for, now we're
having to pay even more for something that should be standard in the first
