Why? Sprint provides this service, free of charge.

Sort of....
Reality is, you go to the store <several w/tech> and they will not reactivate
your phone if it has outdated software. Even my wife gave up <pity the other end
of that conversation>. So if you've got a lot of phones that have been off line
for 6 months or more, you have a big problem.
Now when they separated us from $200.00 for the phone, they never told us it
would become obsolete the moment the original account was canceled. This is not
really legal but they are really doing it.
I am looking for a Touchpoint DualBand LXC E-120 software update source
<cable/software/dealer>.

My guess is that you had an older model phone that was not WLNP
compliant (having a separate MIN and MSID). If those two numbers don't
match on your account and you're trying to activate a non LNP-complaint
phone, they can't do it.
The other problem is that carriers must make certain deadlines for
market penetrating on E911-compliant phones. Older phones (like the
touchpoint you mentioned) are not E911-compliant, either.

It's not only legal, but mandated, actually. When the NTSC TVs in your
house are mandated into obsolescence on December 31, 2006 by the FCC,
are you going to blame CBS for that, too?
