The Treo 300 doesn't do SMS. Their is a short mail program that tries to
    act like SMS.

    ???

Um, short mail has been around a lot longer than SMS, and didn't
    change when SMS launched.

How is that "tries to act like SMS"?

The SMS programs from PDAapps don't do real SMS. I have it for the
Treo 300 and that's not how it works. When you get a Shortmail
notification, the application automatically uses a proxy to log into
Sprint's server, retrieve the message, and then display it on your
phone. It does the same thing to send Shortmail. However it's still
web based and goes through all of the same steps as conventional
Shortmail. It's just that it does it automatically so it gives you a
    SMS feel.

OK- but that just proves Tech's point- shortmail doesn't act like SMS. SMS
    tries to act like shortmail.

Looked to me like TechGuy didnt realize the facts in the case.

The Treo 300 can't do SMS

There is a ShortMail program for the Treo 300 that pretends it's SMS, and for
the user it might as well be, as all the additional steps of shortmail are
    automated.

This is an old article, and a bit techie, but it should help you
understand the differences between SMTP and SMS to a mobile device.
