Samsung vs Sanyo -- Opinions Please

Ok. I've had my Samsung a620 since November, and for the most part it was
working fine, until recently when I moved to another side of town.

I had the a620, my wife has the Sanyo 8100, and our neighbor has the 8100 as
well. Inside our apartments our phones are all nearly USELESS. We have to go
outside and walk close to 1/4 mile to USE the phone successfully.

So... I called Sprint and complained and griped (I love the fact Sprint has
7PM n/w unlim pcs2pcs and all of that -- but if I can't use my phone...)...

So anyhow, they referred me to AlamosaPCS who provides coverage in the area.
I contacted them, and they told me to bring the phones (my 620 and wife's
8100) in for a test..

Took them yesterday.. Both of the phones failed one of the 9 tests that were
performed (cdma something or another, and the other one supposedly couldn't
even get a channel to call out to 'do' the test) -- anyhow..

They replaced my wife's 8100 with another brand new one, and offered me the
Samsung a600 -- I didn't really want it, cuz I like to have caller-id on the
outside (yes I know you can rotate the screen, but I wasn't real big on
it)..

Plus, I never (I used it one time) used the camera on my a620, so I asked if
I could get the Sanyo 5400.. Of course Im going to loose my camera, and
that's no big deal (I could have gotten the 4500 if I'd paid $100.00 towards
it (difference in price from a620 I guess)..

So basically.. Did I make a bad choice? So far, Im kind of still having
problems with the service in and around my apartment and in areas in the
middle of the city. The manager at the store told me that the area I live is
not a known trouble area, and since I got the Sanyo I can say it's gotten
about 20% better so it's possible my Sammy was screwed up..

Anyhow, bottom line.. Is this Sanyo a good solid phone? Will I have any
problems with? Should I go back and get the a600 or even pay the 100.00 and
get the other Sanyo? Im not going to use ReadyLink (at least not right now)
so that's not an issue for me either..

As a matter of history on this newsgroup, Sanyo has always received higher
praises than the Samsung line has...

There have been some posting either here or on howardforums about a
local repeater/signal booster which have had some good results--if
there are several users it might be worth it, with the other
considerations---

I have posted before, that I have had sevice in my house for quite a
while, till last december for about a month---as you say, had to go
outside, or to the top floor--must have been a tower problem, as it
came back on after about 5 weeks---there were a couple of good things
out of it---I called 2 or 3 times a week to *****, as I realized it
must just be an antenna problem--it finally occured to me that if I
called to cancel my service, they might give me something--they did;
got the 750/$40 retention plan, and then they fixed the problem

The service thing was frustrating, as the phone (s) (tried several)
all had some signal--but wouldn't connect---by the way--if you leave
your phones on, does the batteries run down real fast--mine did, as I
discovered it was going crazy trying to find a signal---it was wierd,
the phone would actually get warm from just hunting for a signal (
sanyo 5400 )--till I read these forums, thought I had a bad phone--but
not.

Sanyo phones have always been solid performers (from my experience).

I have just upgraded to the Sanyo RL7300. I owned a Samsung phone ONCE. I
will never make that mistake again. I had problems with it from day one. I
have a Sanyo and my wife has a Sanyo. I have move most of my family to
Sanyo phones. I do, however, sometimes have a problem with finding a good
signal inside my house. But, overall, I wouldn't say that the phone is the
problem. I would say that the apts and the roof on my house is the dilema.

That and the higher freqency 1900 MHz signal SprintPCS uses, which does
less well at building penetration than lower frequencies (i.e. the 800
MHz used by Verizon).
