Hello all,
I'm currently a long-time Verizon user, both in the San Francisco Bay
area and now in Eugene, Oregon. On a whim I stopped by a Sprint
reseller and asked some questions. Long story short, I walked out
with a VM4500 (Sanyo SCP-5500) phone. I figured I didn't have much to
lose with a 14-day trial. I've been driving all around trying the
phone in stores, on the freeway, and in my house.
So far it's been terrific, but my past (about 5 years ago) experience
with Sprint is still eating away at me. I mean, if it ain't broke
don't try another carrier, right? Am I going to get burned by
Sprint's coverage? I spent the extra $5 for no roaming charges, so
that won't get me... and the phone is tri-mode, so I can still go
analog... I'm just worried about jumping in for 2 years.
Any Oregon switchers out there that would care to share their
experience with either carrier?
Thanks!

Stay close to I-5. Go east in the state, and theres no coverage. Inside zip
97401 its OK.

And you would know this how? Texas is far from Oregon.

Anyone can go to www.sprintpcs.com and view coverage maps online. Based on the
map for Oregon, coverage is concentrated along the I-5 corridor, the
Portland-Salem metro area, and Bend.

Which is nice. But it's also not what the original poster asked for. =20
He was asking for personal experience.

Duh, if SprintPCS says it doesnt have coverage outside the I-5 corridor,
do you really expect miraculous personal experience better than that?

Funny- you've been *****ing about the quality of maps for months, and now
they are good enough to offer advice on coverage which you have no personal
experience with. Once again, the moron plays both sides of the argument.
So, which is it, Phil? Your actions indicate that the maps are accurate.

Re: Sprint PCS service in Oregon
The original poster stated he also chose the F & C America $5 option. So
he'll have coverage over most of the state of Oregon. The only lack of
coverage is in the far SE portion of the state. I was just in Oregon and
had Sprint coverage north up the mountain at the OR border(even though the
maps don't show it until you get down the other side). Before that I was
digital roaming (Verizon) North of Redding, CA to the OR border.

Re: Sprint PCS service in Oregon
Sprint's coverage at the UO campus in Eugene isn't good at the moment. They
have plans to build a tower near hayward field but it's not active yet. For
campus coverage, Verizon is best. They built a tower near Franklin and
Villard which is very close to the dorms so coverage on the east side of
campus is excellent, and good enough on the west side. Sprint currently has
very limited coverage on campus.
Another weak spot for Sprint is the VRC mall, which I am also told is a
planned to be improved area. Otherwise Sprint works fine in Eugene. The no
roaming option is a great idea. The Sprint PRL includes both Verizon, AT&T,
and US Cellular for rural roaming (very good).
My only reason to stick with Verizon follows:
- My phone, loaded with a Sprint PRL for testing sake seems to hold onto a
weak Sprint signal even when it's unusable so in places like at my office on
the UO campus, I won't automatically roam over to Verizon. This roaming
will work fine provided there isn't a Sprint signal. I realize this is a
boarder case, but it effects me and my usage.
- Sprint data won't work when roaming. I use data at the northern Oregon
coast where Verizon has native coverage but Sprint doesn't. Highly personal
problem because Sprint has native coverage on I5 south of cottage grove
(roseburg, grants pass, ashland etc) and Verizon doesn't.
- Verizon has been giving me free high speed data (just uses minutes) and
Sprint needs to charge me for this. With Verizon I pay nothing for data
($55 for two lines, with free data). I can't match that price currently
with Sprint. Sprint does have corp. discounts for employees at certain
businesses include the UO where I work (15% off the total bill). Verizon
only offers 12% off the primary line, but my end price is still cheaper with
Verizon (at the moment).
I mean $40 for FC&A plan plus $20 second line plus $15 for data. -- $75
before taxes.

Re: Sprint PCS service in Oregon
I had Sprint, and it worked well. Remember when we bought 50 analong
minutes for $10? Those days are gone. Non I-5 coverage is simpler since
roaming is cheaper, but you still need roaming (often analog) on the coast.
My Sprint line is inactive (didn't close the account so I have the same
number). Today I use ATTWS in Los Angeles and Verizon SRW based out of
Lincoln City. I have found no better service than Verizon for the N Calif
coast up to Lincoln City, and have kept two lines for 4 years. $39.99 for
1000 peak National ATTWS and $34.99 SRW 300 peak with Verizon keeps me well
connected.
Sprint may save you a few bucks, but not a lot. Try Sprint for a year or
two. You may like it. Verizon will hit you $10 to place your current # on
suspend for 6 months, so you can always go back to your old #. Personally,
I would not port my #. I forward my home to my cell, so if I change, I
change the forwarding # on the primary landline.

No, He'd have coverage of most of the western part of the state for up
to 50% of his minutes.

How far? Does it vary day to day? =20
You know, Phillie, *personal experience.* Just like the original=20
poster asked for.
You sure do a fine job of making an argument where none exists. I=20
didn't say the information was invalid. In fact, I complimented it. =20
I simply pointed out that the original poster was asking for personal=20

No, he'd have coverage, period. If he exceeds that 50% threshold=20
twice within three months, we cancel F&CA. But we still cover him,=20
up to however minutes in his plan.

Fine 50 cents a minute is coverage? And in the eastern part of Oregon?
