VM4500 or MM7400?

Which is the better phone, the VM4500 or the MM7400? I currently have the
4500 and am about 15 days into the 30 day trial period. (I am in California
and therefore there is a 30 day trial period by law). I could return the
4500 and get the 7400 if it makes sense.

The 4500 seems to have excellent reception, however, I do not like the
following features:

1. When entering a name in the contact list, if I want to use voice dialing,
I must record the name of the person by speaking the name and then
associating that spoken name with a textual contact list entry. This method
of voice dialing is antiquated. I had an LG6100 on Verizon and all I had to
do is enter the name in the contact list. I did not have to speak the name.
Therefore, all of the entries in the contact list were automatically
available as voice dials without having the record the name for each entry.
Is the 7400 better in this regard?

2. The speaker phone on the 4500 is somewhat half-duplex, however I do like
the feature that it has very good sound quality and ample volume level.


What is the opinion on these two phones? Should I return the 4500 for the
7400?

Are there better choices than these two Sanyo phones? Please keep in mind
that I am only interested in flip phones.

I only have the VM4500, but I'd suggest you check out PhoneScoop.Com --
you'll find plenty of opinions there on the 7400.

It may be, but I'd bet you a nickel that if you have more than a 'large
handful' of names in your address book, the 'record the name of the person'
method is going to be a LOT more accurate than what you say the LG6100 can
do (speaker independent voice recognition based on only the *****ing of the
name).

I very much doubt it.

The 7400 has some significant new features, such as a higher resolution
screen. It's only a hair bigger. I'd be tempted to go for it...

Personal choice, I wouldn't. But I don't have enough contacts to need
more than 30. So that isn't the big issue for me that you appear to
have. Plus, I don't like the looks of the 7400. Obviously, though,
that's just a matter of taste.

I *will* say, though, that the 7400 does seem like a stronger-featured
phone than the VM4500. If voice dialing is as important as you seem to
indicate, then the 7400 is definitely the better phone for you.

I've been privileged to have the MM-A700, and I'm tickled pink with its
featureset. Don't need a speakerphone, so that hasn't been an issue for
me, but it doesn't have one. If that matters, then Samsungs aren't for
you.

The Sanyo MM-7400 has both types of voice dialing. You can use the
computer word interpreter, which tries to match the spoken command with the
stored names. To do that you just say "contact" then the name. If you have
any names that are not *****ed phonetically, the computer might choose the
wrong name, or start interrogating you by saying "did you say phil?", did
you say "Bill?", did you say "will?", and it goes on and on. It's funny the
first time or two, but is exasperating after that.
The other type of voice dial requires that you pre-record the names, and
then dial by using the spoken command "Call voice tag", then the name.
The computer seems more accurate at matching up the desired person using the
voice tag to dial.
The voice dialing on the 7400 is slower than my old samsung, since the 7400
requires a two-step process on your end, and three steps on the phone
computer.
Here's an example of the first type of voice dial, using the "contact"
voice command:
1. You push 'talk' on the phone
2. The phone says "say a command, or press again"
3. You say: "contact"
4. The phone says: "say name from contact entries"
5 You say: "Bill"
6. Ideally, the phone then says "connecting"(in a slighty bored tone),
followed by the computers' interpretation of what the *****ed name entry
should sound like.
You can speed up the process by saying "contact.....bill" after pushing the
'talk' button. You have to wait a few seconds before saying "contact" or
queery 2 above is repeated.
