    This is a good question. I could use this feature, too for
    neighborhood crime watch .... many stolen cars and gang
    activity!

    As general purpose family mobile comms, I agree that the Nextel wins
    hands down (if you ignore the cost). However, in a neighborhood watch
    situation I doubt the hoodlums are going to have scanners or radios,
    and you have a landline right next to you for 911. Neighbors are far
    more likely to buy a $20 radio than a $100 phone and a monthly contract.

    He was speaking of utilizing existing equipment and not activating it.
    911 will still work. Hoodlums would not need a scanner to monitor
    Family Radio, just another unit. If he was starting from scratch and
    needed to talk to other's w/o Nextel's then FRS would be his best bet.
