If Sprint said the ESN is clear, then you should have no problem
activating it. The ESN should not have appeared in their system if it
    was not a Sprint phone.

Sprint has an MVNO partnership with Qwest. Sprint provides the network
and Qwest provides the service, billing, etc. In order to actiavte a
phone on Sprint the phone has to branded with the Sprint logo. If it's
a Qwest phone Sprint will not activate it. The reason Sprint probably
has the ESN in their system is because it's a phone that uses their
network. But for activation purposes it has to be used through Qwest.

You're absolutely right. If it is a Quest phone, it would not work on
    Sprint.
